I have a difficult time getting my 1992 Honda Accord EX automatic with 150,000 miles out of park. I adjusted the shift cable according to instructions and lubed all related parts. Is there something I can do on the exterior (transmission side) of the cable that might make a difference?

Once out of park, it shifts into R, N, D4, D3, 2 and 1 perfectly fine. Getting it back into park is a little stiff and you have to press firmly to hear the click that tells you it's back in P.

Any thoughts, suggestions, advice most appreciated.

Sure the problem is not in the shifter grip's detent button, and not the linkage at all? They sometimes wear out and make pushing the button in not as effective as it should be, which makes park difficult like you are describing.

There's a kind of "ramp" thing in there that wears out, and pushing the button in doesn't fully depress the vertical rod portion that runs down the shifter to the detent. If there's a allen screw or something on the shifter handle, take the handle grip off, and see if pressing the rod directly makes the shifter move easier..

I had the whole area exposed, and pressed down on the center rod without the shift handle and it acts the very same. I even took out the part that rolls into the grooved (notched) piece thinking perhaps it was worn, and even without that piece in place, it was still difficult.

Huh. Maybe you can adjust the cable stop at the tranny case or something...I don't know.

Sounds like the cable travel doesn't quite reach the end of the shift selector's travel on the tranny, puts the shifter in a bind once in park, has a hard time reaching it going into park..have someone move the shifter while you watch the selector on the tranny case move...you might get some inspiration or see something that's interfering or something...good luck with it.

I removed the cover around the tranny side of the cable, sprayed WD40 where the cable connects and it seems to be better! Thanks!
