Auto shift linkage ?

I just got a 1992 MPV 2WD V6 3.0 Automatic w\ 108,000 miles. The indicator for the column shift is out of sync. It shows Neutral when in drive. When it is running it sounds like low fluid in tranny or something rubbing.This increases with the RPM's, But it goes through the gears O.K.(I havent driven it more than 10 miles) All fluids are clean and correct. The meticulous maintenance records and receipts and overall shape makes me think(hope) it is a minor adjustment,but all I have for reference is a cheezy Chilton's repair manual. Any ideas? Thanks.
