'96 Jeep 4.0L GC A/C problem

The A/C clutch on the compressor of my '96 GC engages intermetinently. Driving home in the heat of the afternoon won't engage unless I give it a good tap. Can the clutch be repaired/replaced without replacement of the compressor?:banghead:
