2.2L from pre '99 to post '04; how is it different?

Chevy had a 2.2L before it dropped the 4 cyl. motors in 2000 and brought them back in '04 from my limited research.
Anyone that is familar with the older motor, comment on the changes (assuming there are) with this current "Ecotech 2.2L??

Old 2.2: Pushrod, 2 plugs per coil, old dinasaur with a little bit of new technology here and there:

New 2.2: sohc, coil on plug(sort of) quad 4 type motor. completely new motor style but alot more money to repair when things go wrong. (mechanically)

I do notice (hard not to) that GM has gotten rid of the spark plug wires and moved the electronic module to the valve cover. Now, I see in 2007 they are using four separate 'modules' as opposed to one master unit.
