starting a race

Hi, I am not very familar with racing as i am a new fan... so please don't make fun of me for this question..
whats the best way to start a race in an automatic car (i.e. from a red light)...
for example, should u floor the gas pedal right when it turns green, should u start slow and gradually push harder and harder on the gas?

Depends on what car you have. From a red light, you should hold the brake, put it in "1", rev it up to, say, 2000-3000rpm (again, it depends on what car you have), when the light goes green let go of the brake, let the engine go up to redline, then shift the lever into "2", and so on. This is not very good for your transmission though.

There is absolutely no point in "shifting" an automatic car that has a stock and properly working transmission.

Put it in neutral, rev it up to about half way to redline, then with your foot still on the gas, yank it into drive.

here is what i used to do: i had a RWD 1990 240sx: this works pretty well for the car, so adjust it for your needs:

i would pull up to the light, keep it in drive.
put your left foot on the brake
i would take my right foot, and slowly hit the gas.
at about 3000 rpm my tires would starting spinnin, but the car would not move, just let off a LITTLE bit until the tires stop squeeling
when the light turns green, let off the brake, and you launch just as if you were using a stick: this is the way to save tires

now if you dont car about treadwear e.i. your getting a new set soon

instead of letting off the gas at 3000, keep it there: once you releasing the brake, you will grip and shoot off, but dont do this too often: one launch loses about 2.5% of your tread life....

Small Point. I never owned an automatic that had a tach.
