I have a 1998 dakota with a 3.9 V-6 with an auto transmission. I just bought this truck. I'm having transmission problems with it not shifting from second to third. I changed the fliud and filter and the fluid smells burnt. Does anyone know exactly what type of transmission I have? Or any suggestions. I'm also considering rebuilding if need be myself. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

You have a 42RE, take it to a shop and get it looked at. How many miles do you have, what type of fluid did you use? Does it stay in first or just shift late?

Thanks for the info. It has 135,000 miles on it. It will shift from first to second fine, but thats about it no third or over drive. I'm using ATF 4 fluid and just changed the filter and after driving down the road the fluid smells burned.
