I was just driving home and I noticed a red Stealth on the way back that strangely was from the same town as I am from which is kind of weird since it is a town of about 24k people and we are in a city of over a million now so I figured I would play catch up and see who it is. I see the guy and do not recognize him or his girlfriend. We are at a stop light with me behind him and we take off from a regular start. Come about 50 he jumps on it and so do I. Keep in mind we both have the same motors and transmissions. I start to gain on him surprisingly enough and by the time we reach 120mph I am about 2-2 1/2 cars on him. We catch another light further up the highway and I talk to him.

He: Nice car, is that a VR4?
Me: Nah, just a SL.
Him: Really, how did you beat me?
Me: Well we all know 3000gt's are faster haha
Him: haha, well nice ride man

I then told him about our tri-state 3/s group and he said he would check it out. I wonder what did make the difference in the race. He had an extra person but he weighed about 160 at best and his g/f was nothing short of 110. I am about 210 and had 3/4 tank of gas with a few things in the car such as a backpack. Other than that I just a have a removed resonator and a K&N intake. All in all he was a pretty cool guy.

wouldn't the sl and r/t b the same weight, being there is no AA, AWD or AWS, maybe your just a better driver

i agree with liquid punk, maintanence is the main factor in the equation seeing as its the same motor, hp and weight. ive ran against other sl's and r/t's and most of the time is very close with the exception of that one guy who thinks his car maintains itself and when he tries to run it it just bogs down...sad

The cars condition and driver are always factors. Racing isn't ever as simple as mashing the throttle. He should know that.

Nice kill! :)

how much did you beat him by?

And really, most people never remember to change their fuel filter.. EVER.. it could have been as simple as that, I had a 240 that had a super old filter and when I changed it there was a HUGE difference.

i feel like a n00b. i'm usually very on top of things when it comes to maintenance, but i'll admit i haven't cleaned my K&N in about 3 years, LOL. but with the addition of long tube headers, my car doesn't seem to skip a beat. but it should run a LOT better with a fresh filter.

3 years!? Good God man! lol, I would have pegged you for a freak about maintenance and cleanliness with your car.

how much did you beat him by?

It says by 120 I had about 2-2 1/2 cars on him. 120 is when I shut down too.

thats not much of a difference really. mileage maybe? could be one little thing or 20 little things. between little weight differences, mileage, parts wear, maintenence, tire size and wear, even something like a slightly corroded injector wire lol. theres just so many little things, its impossible to say what exactly is the difference. and when you figure 2 lengths at 120 mph is prolly only about .05 sec. in a 1/4 mile run, you probably wouldnt even get the same results if you ran him again.

more like .01 maybe .02 at speeds of 120

I was just driving a 4cly truck and it occured to me that it is summer and maybye the 3000gt didnt have the ac on or it was on to a lesser extent than the stealth... they can really drai an engine sometimes.. just a thought.
