2001 Windstar SEL Rear Brakes Thumpinglt1z28_99 06-29-2007, 01:41 PM I replaced the rear drums, shoes(linings), and hardware on my 2001 Windstar with 130 K miles. Now when ever you apply the brakes you hear a thumping sound that is speed dependent. The faster the speed the faster the thumping. If you gently apply the brakes you don't hear the thumping at all. Could this be a problem with the ABS sensor, bad bearing, or a bad drum ? Any suggetions ? RickMN 06-29-2007, 02:58 PM Did you buy an economy drum, or a brand name? Economy drums are often out-of-round and have to be machined right out of the box. lt1z28_99 07-05-2007, 09:48 PM I measured the drum runout with an idicator and the TIR is .005 - .006. Is this enough to cause a problem? I bought the drums at Carquest for about $40.00 each. Probabally an economy version. How can they be this far out, right out of the box. Thanks for your help. catvents 07-05-2007, 10:09 PM I measured the drum runout with an idicator and the TIR is .005 - .006. Is this enough to cause a problem? If I would be a bad boy I would say that they have been manufactured in "China" :):):) lt1z28_99 07-05-2007, 11:10 PM I think that they were made in China. :shakehead Surely someone making .50 cents an hour, working with 3rd world machines can do as good a job as someone working in a modern US factory making $15 to $25 an hour. wiswind 07-05-2007, 11:37 PM I had a similar problem with "made in China" drums that I bought at Napa for about $50 each. Only mine caused the vehicle to shake at any speed above 45mph. I tried moving my tires around....thinking that I might have knocked a weight off......I tried having all 4 tires spin ballanced..... Then, I put my old drums back on.....and the problem went away. I took the drums back.....I wish that they had asked me if I wanted "economy" drums.......I would have said "NO". Then I bought Bendix drums from Advance Auto...for about $80 each ..and they have been fine. Not being in the business......I am not up on the prices.....and a quality drum is not that much more. Again....it pays to shop on the internet before walking into a auto parts store. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
