My 94 GCL won't start anymore, it doesn't crank, and I can hear a faint clicking in the engine area. I found my starter was missing the top screw, but I suspect that I should have still heard it spinning when I would turn the key. Make a long story short, I removed the starter and hooked up the battery straight to it and it would spin when I put the + connector on it so I'm sure the starter is good. Battery is brand new and fully charged. Alarm seems to be acting funny. When I put the key in on position, the monitor comes on below the stereo as normal, but as soon as I try to start the engine, the monitor goes out. Sometimes I will see the anti-theft light start blinking, and one of my headlights will start flashing. I can't tell for sure if my alarm is factory or after market, but I wish I could just disconnect the whole thing and eliminate it as the cause of the problem. I'm sure that when the alarm kicks in the engine will still crank, although it won't start, it will still crank, But I'm getting Nothing.
Anything I can do to troubleshoot further? thanks

I'm not sure about the anti-theft stuff, but you might want to have the electrical system tested at AutoZone or some place like that.

I had trouble starting my '94 Jeep GC and the battery & alternator tested fine (althouh it behaved like the battery was dead). As a last resort I decided to replace the starter. I took out the old one and did a "bench test" (sounds like what you did - hooked it up to the battery and watched is spin). It looked fine, but then I tried the same test with a new (rebuilt) starter and it spun much faster. Even thought the bench test "passed", the old starter didn't have enough power to turn-over the engine. The new starter (which took less than 1/2 hour to install) fixed the problem.

found the problem, it was just a rusty bad connection at the starter motor.
I removed the cable at the starter and cleaned the terminals with a wire brush and some sandpaper on the harness, all good now.

also for those who may have problems like this.. just cuz the starter spins doesn't mean its always good.. it may have some build up and that would prevent it from being able to engage properly with the fly-wheel and turn it.. just a thought..
