How do you the friggin steering wheel off on a 70?

The only thing I can find is the big but holding the wheel onto the column, no snap ring or anything. What am I missing?

If I can't get the fucker off there normally the next time I try it, I'm cutting it the fuck off there. This is friggin ridiculous. I already broke a puller trying to get it off, snapped in in half. The damned thing won't budge. :comprage1 :newburn: :swear: :wtf: :angryfire :cya: :chair:

Big bolt?

Never seen a big bolt, just the 3 standard smaller guys around the center of the shaft put the puller bolts in those and away we go. :dunno:

You know I was going to try some quick thinking, you sent me a pic of your damned dash a while back, and the stupid horn cover is on the wheel. :disappoin

(edit) Someone from another board had mentioned a spring on the bottom of the wheel (firewall side) that hold the whell against a snap ring that I may not be seeing, but the wheel is fixed in place... if there's a spring or snap ring I must be looking in the wrong place.

And you can see the splines on the sides correct?

You should be able to jsut put a puller on it and get er loose. Might require some "persuassion" with a mallet from behind given it's probably been there for years.

Yeah, I can see the splines... tried hitting the column with a hammer while pulling, broke a puller.... maybe a gear puller might have a little more balls behind it? There's no hydraulic press that'll work on that is there... maybe I can rent one?

I want to replace it anyway, so I'm not against destroying it, (I'd rather sell it than trash it though), but I don't want to damage the column.

:thinkerg:

sawzall off as much as you can and duct tape the new wheel to what remains

How in the hell did you break a puller, or was it one of those $10 ones?

Yeah it was a cheapie, snapped right down the middle... my friend tried his and the f'in thing wouldn't budge.

Use a harmonic balancer puller. It's going to be stronger than a jaw-type puller, and you can bolt the damn thing to the wheel.

I second the sawzall. lol

:1:

Fire some PB in the splines, butter em up, along with give a nice whack to to the shaft bolt to shock it.

Please tell me that PB does NOT mean Peanut Butter... or is this another thread headed for the depths of depravity?

Is PB Blast like WD40?

looks like it

it's better at breaking things free than WD-40. Best used on suspension bolts and other undercar items (in-line fuel filters especially). Just give whatever a bath in the stuff overnight, and the job is MUCH easier in the morning. :2cents:

Given the history of this 'little project', that would probably open up another 6 months worth of worms in a can :lol2:

PB Blaster is a penetrating catalyst and WD-40 is a lubricant. If you spray PB Blaster on a rusty bolt it will soak into it and break up the rust for easy removal.

ive only pulled them on caprices but for that there only 2 bolts hlding the colum to the dash and then about 8 to the firewall the unhook it at the pump(i dont know if its difernt for a rack and pinnion) and your free besides wires and linkages. of course they where on a figure 8 car so who cares if the collum gets damaged while on a camaro i bet you would want to save it

Call me a novice but... what in the hell would pulling the entire column accomplish when all I'm trying to do is get the steering wheel straightened / off?

wrightz28
07-02-2007, 09:36 AM
Makes it easier to throw :icon16:

Earlsfat
07-02-2007, 10:54 AM
Ah, yes. Or perhaps to gain the proper leverage to smash the wheel to bits amidst one of my increasingly more frequent fits of utter rage.

OR... to have something to swing at the new dog. lol, I've already run out of things to throw at it, little bastard picks up what I throw and hides it. I guess maybe he figures that way I can't throw it twice. (I'll post up a thread tomorrow or something.)

Chevy7x

it will make it easier to work with and if it is stuck on so that you cant take it off you will probaly have to replace the collum or stick with that wheel

Earlsfat
07-13-2007, 12:54 PM
To re-itrate... if i won't come off normally, I will cut it off. Taking the column out will make it less easy to work with, now at least it is bolted down and won't move around alot when I put some force to it. If I take it out about the only thing that would help me is a press... anyone have one that'll fit an entire steering column in it?

I cannot fathom for the life of me why this is so difficult, does pushing pencils until mid April make that much less of a man? :dunno:

Just take it to a shop and let it become somebody elses problem. Dont let them know you even tried to remove it. Walk in and ask how long it will take for them to change the wheel. They will look in a book, give you a time and amount. Then you can split for a bit and have a bite to eat. When you get back the wheel should be off and if they talk about it being hard or taking longer just say "what does that have to do with me the book said it only takes "X" amount of time to do the job.

HAHAHAHA!!!! Tell her I said hi. Yeah it was me.

Someone on another board mentioned pushing the wheel forward to access some sort of keyway that helps hold the wheel on. The wheel does move forward about 1/8", but I can't find any keyway, cotter pins, nothing. Any ideas?

I'm REALLLY getting aggravated with this.

wrightz28
08-06-2007, 11:11 AM
Ok, here is how all the GM;s I've dealt with were, at the top of the collumn shaft you have a sort of nipple (tittle :D ) thne a area that is slightly smallr in diameter then the tittle and the saft that is bout say 1-16" wide. The locking clip goes in that area followed by the splies of the xolumn.

Sometimes you need to push the wheel forward to get access to the clip.

Are you sure there are no bolts whatso ever holding it?

Earlsfat
08-06-2007, 11:27 AM
Well.. there's the nut that goes upto the wheel itself, but other than that I can't find anything.

There has to be something else holding it on though... I bent 2 grade 8 bolts in a balancer puller, messed up the tittle on the column and the god damned thing STILL won't budge... I mean at fucking ALL.

When you push the wheel forward, there isn't anything that I can see that allows you access to any pins, clips, keyways, etc. The wheel just moves in about an 1/8".

ikeyballz

lol, maybe the guy before you welded the bastard in..

or the wheels holding onto the car for dear life.
