Mice & Cavaliers in same family?Cold_Silence 06-12-2007, 02:22 AM I see my title grabbed your attention :grinyes: Anyways, what the deuce is up with the 2000-2002 sometimes 03+04 cavaliers and having that annoying SQUEAK coming from the front wheel(s)? Ive been wondering what it is, my old cavv never ever used to do it, but almost every 00+ cav i see i can hear their wheels or brakes or bearings or whatever it is making a light squeak sound, the faster u go the faster the squeak. Mine does it, and i swapped the brakes.. helped a bit but still apparent. Now im thinking its either the metal "butterfly" clips on the brake pad that hold it on the caliper wiggling and making a squeak on the caliper.. OR its shitty bearings in these gen cavaliers? That is what i have it narrowed down to, any input wud be grand, thank you! Im sure u guys have to know what im talking about with the squeaking! thanks! andrew43420 06-12-2007, 02:29 AM sorry dont mean to hijack yer thread but yea 90% of the time its on the passenger side too mine was doing it and making a clicking sound when i would hit bumps, changed the brake pads and found a small crack in the plastic hubcap, that took care of the clicking sound but soon after it was squeaking again. annoying isnt it, wish i knew too hink123321 06-12-2007, 02:17 PM Have had my 04 Cavalier for a little over a week now and a few days ago it had a loud squeak coming from the drivers side. I thought it was coming from inside the dash. I popped the hood open and pushed down on the car and found that the squeak was coming from the very top of the strut. If you look under the cap you will see some holes in the top of the strut mount. I squirted some WD40 to see if that would stop the squeak. It did so I took some oil and put some in each hole and so far that has fixed it. Noises are sometimes hard to figure out where there coming from. I was lucky that it was coming from the top of the strut. Have you checked that out? Classicrocjunkie 06-12-2007, 02:49 PM I've pretty much replaced everything front end wise minue tie-rod. My front end doesn't squeek. ;) millrtime 06-12-2007, 05:12 PM mine was my hubcap sqeaking....some dumbass at gm overtightened it and cracked it. tried to say it wasnt covered by warranty. once that was fixed, no more squeeks. Cold_Silence 06-13-2007, 01:47 AM Hmm ok, i will check the hubcaps, and the struts? Where did u shoot ur wd40? At the mount towers under the hood, or from under the wheel well area? Tis good to see im not the only one who notices it.. Thanks guys Ronnie_1981 06-13-2007, 03:28 PM you my friend have a strut mount bad hink123321 06-13-2007, 07:18 PM You shoot the wd40 under the hood at the top of the mount. They will be somewhat hard to see but you will find about 4(?-car isn't here right now to check) openings that you shoot the wd40 and that will soak the strut mount. WD40 is what I use to locate any squeak but in my case the noise came back but I at least knew where the noise was coming from. I squirted some oil in there and the noise did not come back. I thought for sure the noise was coming from inside the car but I was wrong. Cold_Silence 06-15-2007, 01:51 AM Yeah i think ive narrowed it down to the struts or bearings. i dont think its break related, but i think u guys are right about struts, the squeak stops for half a second when going over bumps or w/e. Ok i will try spraying the WD-40, do i have to take that tower thing apart, like that black cap that has the nut? or just spray the strut towers from under the hood? Thanks Its rather embarrasing driving past having a little squeak, u can see people looking.. Ronnie_1981 06-15-2007, 11:43 AM i used to have alot of issues with belts squeeking. people would look and i would flip them off for stareing. But maybe you are nicer then me. LOL Cold_Silence 06-15-2007, 02:26 PM Lol i dont go to that extent but at least u know what i mean, its lame. Now i wanna know how he shot oil in there, Do you have to take that black cap off from the middle nut on the strut tower or w/e? hink123321 06-15-2007, 02:31 PM Open the hood and look at the nut that is at the very top of the strut and you will find holes that have a funny shape to them. They go all around the nut. Spray inside those and if it's the top of the strut that is making the noise it should stop. I did this and the annoying noise is gone. On my Cavalier there is no plastic cap to remove. All i see is the nut that is over the strut's threads. Cold_Silence 06-16-2007, 01:30 AM Oh thats what i mean. There is no cap, there is just the same surface the nut sits on kinda. So u dont have to take anything off or loosen the nut? just locate the little holes right around the nut and drop oil down therE? i narrowed it down to the struts i think from many diff. tests. hink123321 06-16-2007, 11:17 AM Yes you have found them. You don't have to take anything off. Just looked at mine and actually you can see them with no problem. Cold_Silence 06-16-2007, 03:06 PM Argh!! This is starting to annoy me! I just oiled them like u said. Its still there. Its gotta be the stupid brake pads! They say to hammer the butterfly wings aginst the caliper? WTF do they mean by that? i tried and it made it worse. There is a lot of pressure on the caliper from them but it can still move around a little bit if u push them. I bet dollars to donuts the squeak is it moving around and the pads metal surface that u grease that touches the caliper, is moving and squeaking.. Has anyone "hamered" their pad wings? this has to be the problem but i dont feel like taking the brakes apart again! Thanks hink123321 06-16-2007, 06:28 PM They make a product that you put on the brake pad itself to quiet them. You just pour a little on the pad and work it around with your finger and let it soak in for 15 minutes. There also is stuff out there that you spray on the back of the pads that will stop some noise. My replacement pads always came with shims and I never had to use that product. I will run out to the garage and find the name of the product that you soak the pad itself. The stuff works pretty good. hink123321 06-16-2007, 07:01 PM The product is called "Stop Squeal" and it's made by BG. A little bottle of this last's a long time. Can you make the noise go away by using the brakes? Usually if the pads are making the noise you can. Just did a search. Go to www.bgprod.com and you will see the product. Cold_Silence 06-18-2007, 02:13 AM Thanks for all the help. Im pretty sure its the back of the pad [non friction side] I will see what i can do. Thanks! Cold_Silence 06-21-2007, 11:20 PM Im really starting to think its not the brakes, as you said the noise should stop if u step on the brake, it still squeaks. Its queer, i seen 3 cavs pass me almost at the same time, an 01, 03, and 2000. They were all making this stupid sound, it really ticks me off, my 96 didnt why should my 02 with half the km's do it? Do i need to replace the strut mounts in general? The oiling didnt work for me. Thanks andrew43420 07-31-2007, 01:02 PM just wonderin if u ever fixed the squeaking, if so what was it sounds like the same problem i have vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
