I am wondering what the towing capacity is for my truck? I have a 1996 sierra Z71 ext. cab 5.7. I want to possibly buy a fifth wheel and I am wondering what weight of trailer I should be looking out for. Thanks for any info.

Hi,
I have a 97 same truck and We pull a 28 foot 7000 lb fifth wheel.
It has no problem on the flats and small hills at all. Though I do keep it out of overdrive while towing.
In Nevada on hwy 50, there are a number of 6 and 7 % grades that really slow it down but it does make it up.
Look for 5 lug wheels because that is the 3500 lb axles and would total 7000 or less for the trailer.
Watch out for 6 lug wheels as that is the 5000 lb axles and the trailer could likely go about 10000 lb.
Also as much as I would like a slideout, they supposedly add around a thousand lbs more.
Being 4WD Z71, we have a low speed transfer in case the hill is too steep, but I haven't needed it yet.
I think the book info looks like I'm at the limit for the truck.
