Which luxury saloon out of these three would you choose and why?

Id take the 7-series cos it's the best to drive and has more presence than the other 2, especially with the huge alloys on. So it makes a bigger impression than the other two, and thats what luxury cars are about, right? ;)

What body styles are we talking about?
I'll take the old 7 or the new S class

yeah i'm not likin the new 7 series. i love the way the s class looks. looks more dignified and sophisticate, not as sporty but looks better anyway. the new 7 series looks nasty. and i dont' think people are ready for iDrive just yet. i'd definately take the older 7 series over the new ones anyday. out of those 3, i'd take the benz in a heartbeat.

S class i would think that is more luxurious but you just can't beat how hight tech (all around) the new 7 series is.

I understand why some people dont like the 7series
its certainly not subtle but has a lot of presence and looks great IMO

i think the i drive is too weird to use. its like yuou have to read this thick ass instruction manuel and you have to memorize all the clicks and turns to activate almost everything. and i've heard that the new 7 series hsa soo much electrical problems that its not even funny. i have a friend who works at a dealer and he would see these brand new 7 series just constantly coming in for service. beucse of that i pick the S class.

I think iDrive is something an exec's 17yr old son will be able to work easily, whereas daddy is stumped. Thats what ive gathered from it

the A8 is good, just a little non descript if you understand that?

The 7-series DOES have prescence, but its still ugly, and VERY unreliable.

The S-class always has been the best of the bunch and things havent changed. Sales figures back this up, ive only seen one new 7 on the road not including the local BMW delaers demo car, S-classes were everywhere as soon as they were released.

I love the new A8

They've worked some majic in Ingolstadt, and the new A8 is some 500 lbs lighter than the new 7, It looks very sharp and has hp boosted to 330.

I always thought the A8 had potential, but only after seeing the new one I'd easily take it over any 7 Series or S Class. Take a look if you haven't seen it yet, I love it.

Audi is going to be a good contender this year.

* My previous post does not tkae the new S600 into consideration, because well, I had to be fair.

The A8 has no presence IMO. It looks like a big A6, nothing spectacular at all

Jimster

The new A8 is my defenite choice.

The interior just looks so ergonomical and so correct, it is very well appointed, typical Audi reliability, AWD, gutsy engines- I haven't hear anything about how it drives- but I'm guessing it'd do that well too:)

I don't like the new Serie 7 whereas I liked very much the old one and I prefer it.
It this list i'd take the A8 because it's discreet, nice, elegant and well done.
The Jaguar XJ is a good alternative and al little bit cheaper and smaller, the Vel Satis, Thésis and 166 are very interesting (moreover if you're not buying the V12 for the S, 7 and A8 but a 6 or 8 cylinders).

The VW Phaeton is nice too. It's a good alternative.

the interior of the phaeton feels cheap IMO.

cheap ?? !! it's better built than a new 7 series !

I've been in a Phaeton, and i don't think so.
And from the back seat, imo, only the Maybach can top it.
But it's not just the car, it's the whole package, watching it being made, taking delivery, the service program.
But then again, I'm Volkswagen biased

Mercedes S-class for me. It looks better, better image than the A8 and a lot more reliable than the BMW7.

Mercedes is more expensive than BMW and Audi and it's not as well made. The finition is not very nice for the price, BMW and Audi make better, except the new série 7 which is not well made :(
ut of course, Mercedes is still a very good car maker :D don't make me say what I didn't say.... ;)

Curious as to why you say they're not well made? Mercedes are exceptionally well made...Absolutely no problems with any of our 2 we own now...Service is PERFECT, great engines, luxury to the max, and the number one thing you pay for...THE NAME. It's a Mercedes, of course it's more expensive than a bmw or an AUDI. It's inherantly a more prestigous class of car. I mean of course a Ferrari 360 Modena almost triples the Corvette Z06 in price, and it's less powerful...But I mean c'mon...It's a FERRARI. Same thing when you compare a Mercedes Benz to an Audi and wonder why the Mercedes costs more:)

A difference between a Ferrari and a Chevrolet Corvette is evident. And with a Ferrari, you'll stay on the road :D .... hum, sorry. ;)
Between the 3 german makers, it is less clear to me.
An S Class is of course an excellent car and when you pay this price you won't have a bad car and a bad finish. But the finish of the Audi is exceptionnal, although BMW does excellent finish but not on the Serie 7. For the S Class, it's good but not as good as the Audi... that's all ;) For the rest, the engine, the service, etc. are good.
Just a bad think on all these cars, you can't have a manual gear... :(

Maybe I'm missing something b/c of the language differences, haha. What do you mean by "finish"? Do you mean the exterior paint finish?

crayzayjay

By finish (finition) he means build quality. How well the car is built and finished inside. And he does have a point. My neighbour has an S Class and the build quality leaves a lot to be desired for a car of that price. some of the materials look cheap full stop. Merc arent building them like they used to; its a well known fact. Before, they used to say to the engineers: "build it, we'll add up the costs and charge the customer a bit more". Now the accountants have been drafted in, its more like "build it to this cost". Its well documented. The Sport Coupe is said to have very mediocre build. There are exceptions. The new E and the one before it are still very good, and the SLK appears built well too.

i have to say i dont think there'll be an M7 either. Though i think the 760i will be revised/replaced, because the S600 has much better performance

What is this bad reliability in the 7 all about???? IU've met dozens of owners who love thier cars. I am aware that every so often someones iDrive gives trouble- but other than that The BMW is a very realible motor.

The new A8 is still better though:p

Stefanel1
01-18-2003, 06:55 AM
Crayzayjay : you understood what I meant ;) Indeed it's the build quality inside !
The Audi is the best (not only the A8) in this domain.

crayzayjay
01-19-2003, 07:47 AM
you're absolutely right, Audi's generally have the best build quality out there, though my friend's A3 seems to be as well built as a 1970's Skoda.

im not a big fan of the new A8, it has little presence IMO and looks bland

i sat in the phaeton straight after an A8, and the controls just felt more plasticy and loose. And Mercedes have excellent reliability again now. They went through a small troubled time, but have pulled through. BMW are the ones in trouble now, recalls on alot of their models. Audi have never been quite up to the standard of BMW and Mercedes. Its all reflected in sales figures.

i was aware of Merc's problem, which by the way is still not cleared up on some models, but i havent heard anything about poor build quality on BMW's. Audi is acknowledged to have the best build quality today

Agreed on the Mercedes problem...Two of them in my garage right now, absolutely no problems whatsoever. Beautiful vehicles, incredibly fun to drive, just all around wonderful cars, couldn't be happier:)

A manual gearbox in such cars doesnt really make sense to me. Maybe a steptronic?

Yea, agreed here. Wouldn't be a profitable endeavor for the company, as I'm sure most of the buyers aren't interested in manually racking through the gears.

I don't like th new 7 series and the new S class ...
I prefer the old 7 series with hamann aero kit .. lower with AC Snitzer spring ... hamann muffler ... hamann 19" .. 255 at front ... 285 at the rear ... looks wide and low .. heemmm .. ;) :D :flash:

before I decided to use it I had been check from other brand ... but most of the design couldn't really move me ... Most of Hamann design are a little bit too extremm .. but when i saw the kit for E 34 .. it really something .. not really too much ... hehhehehe .. that's for me I think .. I like the wing on the rear glass and on the trunk ... the design really go in the flow with the body ... and makes the car look macho from behind ... just my personal opinions ... :) :D
