Anyone use any cheap, readily available item to make mini wires for the engine bay? Or is ordering them the only way?

I asked my dad this once, he said use telephone wires, just tear them apart then wa la!! Although I never did try it, cause I'm not sure how thick the wires are, if you try it, well me if it works, I got no extra tele. wires to cut up!

I bought a telephone cord from the 99¢ store and stripped it for the wires inside. Regular 4-pin wires have red, black, yellow and green wires inside. They're a good size for plug wires, but the problem with mine is that the colored casing is rather translucent, so I'll have to paint them to get them to look realistic...

Try Radio Shack, I hear they have perfect sized wires suitable for models, and the price is a lot better than packages sold for modelers.

If you have a Radio shack ask for 30 gauge wire wrap wire. If not try to find an electronics supplier in your area and ask for the same. Also miniature coax striped is great for braided lines and hoses. For smaller ribbed hoses try bigger guitar string the wrapped type. regular telephone wire(the kind in larger cables such as the 25 pair which is standard) is a little large and not very flexible and none of it has a solid color insulation. The wire wrap wire is silver plated solid(not stranded)copper with insulation. It is very bendable and posable.

...on a related note, if there's an old
bicylcle repair shop in your neighbourhood, pop
in and check if they have some rubber coated
wire for rear bike lights.
That stuff works perfectly for coolant hoses in
1/24 cars !
