No Get Up And Go...96 Corsica

I bought my 3.1 V6 96 Corisca with only 41,000 miles on it. The car even looks new! I've already put 1,000 miles on it since I bought it. I replaced the intake manifold gasket because it was starting to leak on the outside not too long after my purchase(caught it early). Everything is now perfect with this car except for one thing. It has no get up and go. I notice it only when I accelerate up hills and entering a freeway where you have to accelerate fast. I literally have to put the pedal to the metal and still that's not enough. Once it gets up to the 55 mph speed or so it's fine. The tranny shifts as smooth as silk at all times.

Previously I drove a V6 Lumina with what should be the same power and pick up. Is there something I can look at that could enhance the power? Or better yet is there something that could decrease the pick up power that I should look for?
