Making Rims (experimental)MidnightWangan 05-13-2007, 06:55 PM Don't know if this thread belongs here as it's not a complete kit. Some attempts at making rims. Materials are a mix of sculpting clay, epoxy putty & basic putty. The mould used for disck brakes. The master's on the left, replicated piece on the right, flash not removed & yet to be sanded down. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastDiscBrake01.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastDiscBrake03.jpg Converted a Fujimi 17" into deep-dish. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims01.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims02.jpg http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims03.jpg Made a mould for one-side of the rim. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims06.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims07.jpg http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims08.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims09.jpg edit: pics placement. MidnightWangan 05-13-2007, 07:05 PM Option of deep-dish or normal off-set. Outer rim made from 0.5mm pla cards. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims17.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims18.jpg http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims19.jpg Test-fitting it. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims20.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims21.jpg That's it till later, still gotta touch-up the disc brakes & patch up some hairline cracks. Tks for looking. :) edit: pics placement. sasmiha 05-16-2007, 03:58 PM Added some indents to the rim. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims10.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims11.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims12.jpg http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims13.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims14.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims15.jpg Great job! How do you flip the rim till it arc like the last pic? Can't wait to see more! MidnightWangan 05-16-2007, 04:26 PM To protrude the rims, i used a piece of sprue of similar diameter to the center of the mould & pushed it outwards, from the rear. Modeling Clay(oven-bake to harden) & epoxy putty(4-8hours) as you probably know, doesn't harden immediately, hence it's possible to push/protrude the rims whilst in its partially-hardened state(for epoxy putty approximately 2hrs). hth MidnightWangan 05-16-2007, 04:39 PM In-between the rims, did a little on a 1/24 Driver Figure(tamiya). Split the head, hands, arms, torso & one foot at the joints. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/DriverPoseable01.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/DriverPoseable02.jpg Original pose. Changed pose: gear-shift, head facing to the side, parts are moveable. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/DriverPoseable03.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/DriverPoseable04.jpg Original pose. Heel & Toe position. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/DriverPoseable05.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/DriverPoseable06.jpg Later. :) utzelu 05-16-2007, 04:39 PM Great job!!! Did u cast the pieces with resin? Could u give me more details about all materials used? jmwallac 05-16-2007, 04:44 PM http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastDiscBrake01.jpg So this orange material is the oven baking clay? Can you get the same level of detail as a silicon mold? Did you spray anything to act as a mold release? Looking forward to the rest of this thread... MidnightWangan 05-16-2007, 05:09 PM The orange material is Modeling Clay similar to Super Sculpey & has to be oven-baked to dry, harden & can be sanded, however, primer has to be layed-on quite thick before spraying on colors. The yellow-ish material is Tamiya Epoxy Putty. Minute, finer details could not be captured (probably didn't press it down hard enough) such as the embossed Brembo font on the disc brakes. For mould release, grease was brushed-on. This isn't really casting, more like replicating using finger-pressure & suitable for small parts, saw it in a Mecha forum & gave it a go. 2-part liquid resin would still be ideal & less of a hassle IMHO. hth http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/2partResin00.jpg edit: spelling. evil_hanzel 05-16-2007, 10:56 PM love what you did to driver figure. kyuuketsuki 05-17-2007, 12:10 AM hmm... you are a singaporean? if you are in singapore, maybe we could meet up some day, exchange ideas or rather i learn skills and technics from you, especially moulding of parts. MidnightWangan 05-17-2007, 02:36 PM evil_hanzel, tks, it was a necessary mod as i needed a different pose for a diorama. :) kyuuketsuki, Seen your nick in Sr-garage. PM-ed u. :) MidnightWangan 05-26-2007, 04:27 PM Hello again, minor updates on the disc brakes, some hairline cracks on the rims. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastDiscBrake03-1.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastDiscBrake04.jpg http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims22.jpg http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims23.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims24.jpg MidnightWangan 05-26-2007, 04:38 PM Some alterations to a 1/24 anime figurine for a racequeen Dio. A comparison with the Tamiya Rally Driver set helmet. The replicated rim is on the top right of pic, modified deep-dish's on the left & the original's on the bottom right. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/DriverHead13.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims26.jpg Rims finally sanded, primed & tested some Alclad on it. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims27.jpghttp://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/rivanic/CastRims28.jpg That's all till later, tks for looking. :) Fabbri_Guy 06-27-2007, 08:49 PM your work is cool. When these materials get in the right hands the potential is endless!!! Keep it up. evil_hanzel 06-27-2007, 09:38 PM whoa. love the rims. and the driver fig too. :D:D:D really cool stuff!!, question, do you also mold tires? MidnightWangan 06-27-2007, 10:26 PM Trying to, problem is the materials required are pretty scarce afaik over here in Singapore, sourcing for it in the neighboring country of Malaysia, but then would have issues bringing it across the Immigrations' Customs & Excise Dept due to new regulations restricting chemicals, aerosols and the like. Had a hard time sourcing rtv rubber & 2part liquid resins & heck, even Finisher's Paint supposedly falls under the controlled items & chemicals. Sigh I'm guessing your army of new builds needs some new rubber shoes huh. evil_hanzel 06-27-2007, 11:30 PM right you are. my army of old skool rides need some tires. i have a couple of rims without tires.(they came with slicks and slicks in a street car is a no-no):D:D:D. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
