Vehicle: 1999 Isuzu Rodeo V6 LS 4WD
Milage: 11,4000
Transmission: Automatic

It has the following gears: P R N D 3 2 L

The car is ok when it's in park. The problem is when I shift to Reverse (R), the front instrument panel indicator is showing Park (P). The car does actually reverse. When I shift to Neuteral (N), indicator shows no light. When I shift to Drive (D), The indicator shows (L). The car drives OK from 0 to 25 MPH, then it won't upshift to (3) or (D). when the car reaches 45 mph, the engine goes up to 3700 RPM, at 50 mph, the engins goes up to 4200 rpm. When I shift to (3), the indicator shows (2). When I shift to (2), the indicator correctly shows (2). When I shift to (L), it correctly shows (L). See below chart for clarity:

P - P
R - P
N - blank
D - L
3 - 2
2 -2
L - L

Hoping it was just a minor problem, I tried to fix it by replacing ATF. and I cleaned the Range/Mode switch as suggest by reading other posts. But the problem is not fixed.

Any body has this problem before, or knows what's wrong with this tansmission. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

your range selector needs to be cleaned. Nothing major.

I may be time for a new range sensor then. I think they cost like 80 bucks.

Yes, it was indeed the range sensor (technically call "Neutral Safety Switch") went bad. Costs around $130 from Rockauto (dealers charge more). Changed it this morning and the car is rejuvenated. Sweet. Thanks Amigo-2k. This is a great forum!

Hi Guys,

About an hour ago my truck's transmission went bad on me. I was in four wheel drive trying backing up my boat into my garage when it went bad. Nothing working at all when I put in reverse or drive it is making noise and nothing move. Is there any sensors for the transmission for my truck? Please help me.

It's funny you mention this; had the same exact scenerio play out on me years ago, with my then '91 Rodeo automatic 4x4.

It too, stopped while backing up the boat.....only on a very slippery dock

Should have seen the looks on the faces of people nearby when I ran up the dock, and drove our other Rodeo down to haul up the older Rodeo AND the boat....kind of tricky at first, as the '97 Rodeo is only a 4x2 auto, but I couldn't unhook the boat where she stood, she was still stuck on the trailer!

Turned out a $1,500 sensor DID in fact go out, thank goodness it was replaced under extended warranty.

I threw away all of the older Rodeo's receipts just last year, so I couldn't tell you which sensor.

Is your tranny making noise? Or is it just the engine you're hearing?

How old's your tranny fluid?

Thanks for your replied. What is kind of sensor would cost that much "$1,500.00" Could you please help me find out the sensor that dealer replaced in your truck. I think my tranny was making the noise when I put into either reverse or drive not motor. My neighbor a cross the street mention to me about some switching or locking sensor also for me to check first. I have Hane repair manual but no mentioning about an automation transmission sensor at all. I hope some out there have this happened and help me fix this problem.

Thanks so much.

You'd be amazed AND scared to find out what some sensors can cost in these computer generated vehicles.

We bought an '04 Tacoma V6 7mnths ago, at that time, they went over just some of the sensors in that truck and the cost involved if one were to go out - they didn't need to bribe us, we bought that extended warranty!

You know that dealer is probably long since gone, Courtesy Isuzu on Sahara road in Vegas, NV, which is the same dealer I bought my 2nd Rodeo from. They wouldn't even have records anymore I'm sure, that's been 9yrs ago, and I don't even remember the vin number off that '91 Rodeo to give them for researching.

It's NOT a common issue/concern for these auto's I can tell you that, I remember the dealership saying that they'd only seen it happen once or twice; so it may or may not be your issue.

I've never had it happen to my 2nd Rodeo, and she has more mileage now then the 1st one did when it happened.

How old's your tranny fluid; and what has been the maintenance intervals?

Have you checked your fluid level?

klvaleri, your problem doesn't seem to have anything to do with the (old) subject of this thread (upshifting problem).
my suggestion would be to start your own new thread with the appropriate title (something like : trans makes noise, won't move).
that way more people are likely to react to what's going on with yours.
(sorry, i'm not one of those from what i've read so far)

good luck
