i just noticed that i have a small leak of transmission fluid and it looks as if it is the center differential that is leaking. i am still learning about 4WD vehicles and I am wondering if this is something that can be fixed. Do these things usually leak due to a bad seal or something like that? its a 98 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the Selec-Trac and it has about 144,000 miles on it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Your center diff. is the transfer case. Check the owners manual as to type of fluid to use in it. I suggest you clean off the transfer case with a cleaner, we use "Brake Clean", make sure you are wearing safety glasses. Take it on a test drive then try to pin point where the leak is coming from, i.e. case housing, tail shaft seal, etc. :)

it was coming from the case housing. i took it apart and decided to replace the seal. it was pretty beat. i put in a new one and put everything back together and filled it with fluid and there was no leak. thanks for the help!
