im lookin into buying a 1986 nonturbo 944 for about $1200. the owner seems to have taken pretty good care of it. 79000 miles, wasnt a daily driver. but the thing is, it has been sitting for 4 years and hasnt been started at all during that time. he also said i would have to do a major tune up before i could start it at all just in case the timing belt breaks or something. is this true? and how much would it cost to do all of the timing belt, fluids, etc etc. and would it be possible/wise to try and do some of it yourself?

You should do timing belts, rollers, water pump, DME Relay and thats about it. If you find that you get a no-start problem then you can look for the usual suspects. EG.. speed / refrence sensors, AFM, etc.

If you do the work yourself, you can look at around $600 to for the belts / rollers / pump.
Check out http://www.rennbay.com/tutorials.html or http://clarks-garage.com for info on how to do the work yourself.
