I was having problem with my 05 Accord regarding the shifter lock on Park. I took it to Dealer today and took them a full day to find out the problem. They told me that the ECM is crashed and it will be $850 to have it fixed.

How could it be? I was able to drive the car by bypassing the shifter lock and there were no Engine check light on at all. Is this posible??

Anything is possible but it doesn't sound right. Is the P light lit when the car is in Park? If not could be the shift position switch or the interlock control unit if the 2005 has one. It could be the ATU which provides an input to the interlock control unit, but the ECM? If the ECM crashed, I think you would have an inop car. I would get a second opinion or ask a lot of questions. By the way, what is the name of the dealer? You can PM me.

Most cars shifter lock malfunctions because someone poured half a Big Gulp or a cappachino into the console by accident, and the shift detent solenoid is sticky. A quick dissassembly and cleaning fixes it right up....

Update on ECU,

Got the car back with new ECU, cost me $850... and didn't fix the problem. I was angry that they wanted more money out of me to repair this, for now I'm just going to use the bypass thinggy.

Unfortunately I don't have warranty, it's a salvage title car with front end damage but repaired to factory spec with only 10k mile on the engine.

I'll take a look at the lock solinoid by the shifter. The shifter is clean no dust or sticky residue.

I'll keep this updated.

Take the car back to the dealer and bitch like hell to the maintenance manager, then to the Honda zone district manager. You should not have to pay for it. Dealers like that give Honda a bad name. If you can't resolve it through the dealer or Honda, sue the basterds in small claims court.

well i have an 89 accord and had the same problem. the nutral safty switch, reverse light switch, shift indicator switch and shift lock/unlock selinoid are all one unit located under the shift colum. the unlock selinoid is wired through the brake light switch and some sort of ignition switch locking selinoid. ( i was stuck in park w/ the key stuck in the ignition at a gas station 3 am dead of winter!). :banghead: Now on your car the ecm is OBDII so it might recieve a signal on the shift lever position (for idle air changes) but there is no way in hell that the ecm has control over the shift lock selinoid. my problem was that in cold wheather the car thought i was trying to start/stop the motor in reverse but was actualy in park. so i left it in nutral and set the e-brake all winter. now that its warm out i dont have this problem anymore. i would definitly raise hell at that shop. and also check to see if you can here a click from the center consloe when you hit your brakes.

2nd Update on the Crashed ECU.

I took the car to another Dealer (the reason I didn't take it to the first place was because that dealer is a rip off "car prices wise.")

They fixed it within an hour. Plus they didn't check if the car has salvage tittle or not, they just said "Oh the warranty covered it"

It was the gear shifter soliniod.

SWEET :)

Thanks for all the feedbacks
