Hi, I have a 1996 Lumina car which I lost the key....I had the locksmith try with the vas coder (15) different codes and none work...my mechanic then did it his way he put a resistor in a cable under the dash and started the vehicle with 2 screw drivers by the starter....next he ran a clip attched to the starter with a wire which i place on the positive to start all the time...i have to open the hood everytime i start the car...does anyone have a better solution...:2cents:

Welcome to AF. Contact a Chev dealer see if the factory records still show the resistor/key code for your car, you must prove you own it, and get a key and resistor made up. I assume you have a key to turn the ign. A variable resistor with the the 15 different resistance ranges available should have been able to replace the key resistor at the connector under the dash.

Another temporary option will be to put +12v to the starter relay's fuse - at least, you don't need to open the hood for that and if you have an extra cigarette lighter plug with a wire you can do it more or less conveniently until you solve the problem.
