Ok...

Here's the story:
My car was parked in front of my home. On the street (older part of town - no one has driveways).
Another driver drove straight into the rear drivers side (said something fell from his visor and he was bent over to pick it up).

The bumper is all smashed in, the rear quarter panel is buckled, my trunk will no longer close, my rear door will no longer open, and the wheel wells were pushed forward far enough that there is only about an inch of clearance now between the rear wheel and the inside of the fender.
The adjuster had stated that the rail on that side was bent pretty well, but could not recall if it was in a "crush zone".

The general condition of the vehicle I would categorize as fair.
Just over 150k miles. Engine was rebuilt at 100k.
It's badly in need of paint job - balding and speckled all over the top, hood and trunk.
Moderate body rust along the bottom for a car it's age.
The passenger side door panel is loose and kinda flops there a bit.
The console in the middle of the front seat has a busted hinge and kinda swings around wildly.
Electronics have a few issues that I've not been enthused enough to investigate: using the lighter causes fuses to blow, cassette deck does not work, air doesn't cool (not sure of refrigerant level).

Mechanically it's fine. It does tends to run hot, and does not like to restart soon after moderate trips (hour or more) followed by a short stop (less than an hour).

I paid $1900 for the vehicle 2 years ago.

Anyways...
It's been deemed a total loss.
After looking at values I was expecting an offer around $1500-$1800,
So the insurance company calls me and makes an offer of $2260 and a salvage bid of $300.

This seemed like a far more than fair offer to me, however, everything I'm seeing is telling me that this would be a lowball offer from the insurance company (Progressive, btw).

Anyway, I'm not real sure how to proceed from here.

My initial plan is seeing what it would cost just to make it safely rollable. I don't car what it looks like cosmetically in the slightest. As long as that's at or below $1200 or so I'll just get it fixed and continue to drive it.

Regardless of what the price is for minimal repairs I would imagine I should be able to part it out myself for more than $300 - is that a resonable assumption?

Should I be making a counter offer?
If so, is there some general guideline of what amount I should come back with?
If I do make a counter offer do I need to verbalize some reasoning to them for legitamcy, other than I want more money?

I've just never had to deal with anything like this before at all, and any general advice would be appreciated....
thanks.

This car had too many issues BEFORE it was wrecked. And now you have a chance to get more than you paid for it after two years? Count your blessings and let them pay you the money, keep the car and let them keep whatever they keep for allowing you to keep it. Then, part the car out cheaply for quick sales (or sell as parts car whole for $200-$500). I would not try to drive this car again. It sounds as though it would not be financially feasible to even get it safe and roadworthy. The engine and tranny are not worth much because of age and condition, but as a whole car you get something.

Look around on-line and elsewhere to see what is takes to by a 95 with low miles. There should be some out there that are in-line with what you had. In other words, price some fair market value equivilents. Then, add up what you paid for it plus any money you have put into it. Compare it all. If it looks like 2,260 is not enough, send them the value you came up with and support for how you arrived at the amount. Might be able to tell them on the phone. They like to resolve these fairly quickly, so if you need a few days to think about it, tell them so. Are they paying you for a rental car to get around for the time being?

Did you read his description of the cars condition and mileage ,Nada shows about 1750 for that car with the deductions.

thanks for the input.

yeah, they gave me a rental and told me to think about it over the weekend.

looking through the used cars over the weekend it looks like $2200 is around the low end for a comparable vehicle.

the estimate i got to just straighten out the rail and quarter panel was $750.
