I emailed this to bnaylor, If I knew he was the moderator of this forum I would have just posted it.

Anyway, I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand AM GT. The abs light keeps coming on while driving. I took it to autozone and they turned the car off and ran the scanner and it showed no code. I need a scanner that will read this type of code. I assume the code will have to be read while the car is running.

Please advise me on a scanner for this car and this problem. I also have a 2005 Chevy 4x4 work truck. It would be nice if the scanner worked on this as well.

Thanks
Brandon

ABS scanners are usually of the high end or very expensive category. The Snap On MT-2500 has ABS capability as do the Tech II scan tool GM dealers use. The major problem is these are expensive $$$ and used primarily by the Pros. The Tech II is actually the best scan tool to use because it will properly retrieve and display GM Mark VI ABS codes with proper translation. So you may consider just taking it to the GM dealer for ABS diagnostics only. Another company called SPX/OTC makes lower cost ABS/Airbag scanners but they are over $1K in cost.

With ABS capable scanners tests are run while the car is moving to check wheel sensor speed output and also while not running ignition to on just like a regular odb-ii scanner to check other ABS components like the modulator, motor pack, solenoids and EBTCM module.

You might just consider making a post at Grand Am or N Body Problem Diagnosis and have your ABS issue discussed.

And welcome to AF.

too bad you don't own a Mustang; my 95 Cobra actually has its own ABS diagnostic port, you just short two pins together and turn the ignition key to the "run" position and count the number of times the ABS light blinks--------it blinks its own codes. look around, its possible your cars might have the same feature but i haven't heard of any other vehicles having this separate port.
