I sounds like you have a good start with the normal bolt ons. IMO I would step up your cam. Deciding on which cam depends on your transmission, the type of manifold and how good the exhaust system is. Many times people still end up with to big of a cam or to much cam for the motor set up. Anyway if your talking cheep call summit racing they have SBC cam kits around $65 cam and lifters and a gasket install kit for $16 also the tech line can help with size of cam once they have engine info.

It really depends how far you want to go into it. Of course, nitrous is the cheapest way as long as you do not over do it and your engine is healthy enough to handle the extra load.

Changing a camshaft can be done in a day, but its not easy. You want to move clean air in and exhaust out as easily as possible. Here is a typical 350 build up in a computer dyno simulation:
