96xj 4.0 Spark plug gap

has anybody ever heard of gapping your plugs wider than what the MFG calls for ( i think its .35) is there an advantages to doing this ( better fuel economy?) or is it for more power

No...

Excess plug will cause retarded timing, while the ignition waits and waits until enough voltage is generated by the coil in order to jump the plug gap.

Retarded timing causes a lot of power and efficency.
