I had to replace the rear axle recently in my truck due to a badly worn pinion bearing, cheaper to find a rebuilt one that to rebuild mine. However a new problem seems to have cropped up, as I'm driving, the rear brake shoes are jamming on (it is like driving around with the e-brake on) this problem happens slowly and over time and usage.(rear drums get really bloody hot) In the beginning I was forced to wait until the brake shoes had relaxed enough to continue driving but recenly I have been carrying around a line wrench and when it happens I open up the bleeder valve to release the pressure.

I have already replaced the wheel cylinders, brake shoes, all rear brake lines and the Master cylinder. No luck in fixing the problem.

Like I mentiond before this issue happens over time and usage ie: the rear brakes slowly work thier way to the point where they are jammed and the truck will no longer move! really sucks when you are stuck in an intersecton and traffic is starting to pile up because of this!!!!

any ideas anyone?

Sounds like adjusters may be on wrong sides.

Disconnect the abs,Ford had problems with the abs brakes on the earlier Ford trucks and the rear brakes will work better.I know about this, one of my father's friends had problems with his and the rear brakes worked better after disconnecting the abs.I do not remember how and you can do this.

Any issues with the front brakes getting hot ? Check to make sure the booster rod is not pushing on master cylinder piston when everything is at rest.

it's deffinately the abs. Fords were notorious for that exact problem. You can readjust and they will work fine but the problem will come back soon. The best thing is to disconnect. The rear abs is rarely ever activated anyhow, only 30% of braking is to the rear wheels. You will never notice that the abs is disconnected.

well I finally got around to fixing this problem, Yep it was a complete failure of the ABS system, right from the control module tucked inside the frame rails to some computer thingy under the dash. A friend of mine has his own repair shop with the code reader so he hooked it up and walla!!

A complete dissconect of the ABS system seems to have solved the problem. The rear brakes still work, just under hard braking they lockup....ohwell!

With 310,000km on the odom. and it being 16 years old I can live without RWAL brakes
