99 LeSabre Heater Fan

Wifey says the car has no heat. everything else is working including cruise control so Im thinking it's not a fuse. Once the car is warmed up a little heat comes out the vent.

Im thinking it's the fan - is it hard to change. Any thoughts?

If you do have a bad motor, you may be able to lightly tap the motor with a hammer (with blower control switch in the ‘ON’ position) and it will run for a while. First, see if you have voltage going to the purple wire to the fan motor. You can also test the fan motor operation by using a jumper wire (10-12 gage wire, fused @ 25 amp) from the battery post, to the positive terminal (purple wire) on the blower motor. If the fan motor runs with the jumper, you can suspect the blower resistor module has failed. Do you have ACC (Auto Climate Control)? BTW, it is easy to change the fan motor on the LeSabre! Check these things & post back with your findings.:popcorn:

Yes this LeSabre has the auto climate control and Im not fan of it haha.

I looked at the fan and it looks like a pain to get out. There is not much room between the 3.8L engine and the firewall - I can only imagine trying to get that thing out of there with the squirel cage on it.

I will have to see if I can find my test light to check for voltage.

Well I took your advice and tested the purple lead and there is power to the fan and the test light got dimmer as we went thru lowering the fan setting. Sure as shooting we started the car and a few taps with a little rubber mallet and the fan started up.

So do you think we need to replace the fan now? We live in N Wisconsin and the fan runs all the time so no doubt it fubar'd. It's so cold here right now if we can nurse it by tapping it for a week till things warm up that would be nice.

Is it hard to get the fan in and out for replacement? it looks like the bar that runs between the shock towers needs to come off along with loosening the vacume lines that go to the HVAC for room to get it out. Any tips? I sure want to thank you for your spot on advice!

Fan needs replaced...carry the mallet with you, Show the wife how to tap it! I can relate being in michigan. Yes the shock tower bar brace has to come off, you should be able to twist blower motor out without much problem. Your new motor should come with a cage. Price out the new part, I ended up putting a salvage yard blower motor unit in a olds 88 that I was not planning on keeping. The price difference was quite a bit different. Good Luck.

Thanks guys. I bought a new blower last night. Not sure when I can get it in, maybe next weekend at this point. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well I finally put this fan in as I was dreading it. The clearnance for pulling it out was restricted and finally I figured out to bend the bracket that holds the lines to the heater core back out of the way and got it done.

Putting it back together was easier than taking it apart.
