My son is looking at used pickups. He has looked aa 99 with the smaller v-8 (4.8), auto, extended cab, short bed, 2WD. It has 95K miles.

What generall goes wrong with these trucks at this mileage? I can fix most anything, but we are looking for the bigger ticket items. For example, do these engines usually last, is the tranny know for problems, etc.

I appreciate the comments and assistance given on this forum!

You never can tell really, but if its been well taken care of and has maintenance records, it should last a good while past the mileage you stated. Drive it and see if the tranny shifts good, and if the engine lacks power or smokes/knocks.

Why not go for the 5.3? Mileage is hardley any different for the increase in power.

I have the same truck that you described w/101,000 mi. The only work that I have done is replaced the fuel pump. I take good care of it and change the trans fluid every 50,000 mi. But like jeverett said, it is hard to determine if the previous owner has taken care of it. Best thing to do is drive it, and ask the owner if he has kept maint. records.
