Subaru buying advice

My wife and I are considering buying a fairly new outback or forester. What are some things that we should be looking for? Any warning signs? What is the average life expectancy of a Subaru?

Subarus are very reliable. To find out more about specific problems know for these cars goto nasioc.com (biggest Subaru forum on the web)

You will notice in this forum that these cars don't have a lot of problems. We have an 2008 Forester and while it is good for what we bought it for, it seems to lack certain qualities we found better in our 2006 Corolla such as seats, ride, etc.
Mechanically, I think they are on par with Toyota. My in-laws have a 2000 Outback with 140k. It's been a good car. No breakdowns - just normal maintenance.
My neighbor has an old Legacy with a couple hundred thousand miles on it. He swears by Subaru.
The one thing my Forester will do that my Corolla could not do is go up to my house when it snows (up a mountain).
The Forester and Outback are not cars that I enjoy driving for hours on end. Thats because of the seats and the stiffness of the suspension. For handling though, they are hard to beat.
