Ive been doing detailing for about 5-6 years now and am pretty well aware of what rail dust is. But I guess I am trying to look deeper into the subject since ive been noticeing more and more, mainly white cars, in the north dakota region with small rust spots on the surface. Does anyone have a good website to read up on this or anyone feel like typing out a novel to explain this? :banghead: Of course there is railways around this area, but nothing to think that this would cause as much issues as it seems to do to cars in this area. A couple factories are around too but where else do these spots come from? brakes from trucks/cars/buses too right? Thanks!

Some of what you see could even be iron oxide used a fertilizer and gone airborne. I think you already pinpointed brakes (self-inflicted as well as from neighboring vehicles) and rail dust. White is a color that's ever-growing in popularity, so maybe that's another reason you're noticing it these days.
