Hi there... welcome to AF...

There are a few nice shops around..

> The Orchard Store -- At Specialist Shopping Centre
> Central Hobby Plus -- At CentrePoint
> Tai Seng -- Importer for Tamiya.. great deal
> A small hobby shop at Far East Plaza
> A small hobby shop at Tiong Bahru Shopping Centre
> A small but well stocked hobby shop at the Katong Shopping Centre

Umm... where's the one at Marina Sq?? Can't seem to remember any... or is it a new shop?? I have been in Aust for too long I think.. :p

Any other shops I missed out????

well, to add to the list, there is a newly opened hobby shop in Jurong east IMM. its a branch of the hobby shop in Tiong Bahru Plaza. There's another 1 at Grandlink near Paya Lebar MRT station specialized in cars and bikes. for further details of the location of the shops, you may email me at bibendumz@yahoo.com.

Geez, I was wondering.. where can I get discounted kits, rims and spoiler in Singapore? :D

( On budget! ;) )

surreal
10-09-2002, 07:09 AM
seems to me that the prices of car kits are quite standard in singapore......costing ard 28.90 for a normal tamiya kit and 30++ for better kits from tamiya,fujimi,revell....etc

Forhod
10-09-2002, 10:46 AM
I agree, everywhere is almost the same price but sometimes, popular have discount :)
Still.. where got get spoilers and rims..

Rcaerosport
10-09-2002, 12:52 PM
For discounts, wait till the major retail outlet has Sales, like Isetan etc. normally, its 20% off, though don't expect an awesome range......

For wheels..looks like you will have to mail-order for Fujimi and Aoshima.

Perhaps the Singapore builders can combine together for a group buy...

There is a shop at Grandlink Square, Paya Lebar selling rims and also the aoshima 3 piece wing set. But it cos rather expensive, i guy at the shop told me the price for the rims are between S$10.90 to S$18.90 if i remembered correctly, and the 3 piece spoiler set i think is around S$20. I just went down last week and they are having a 20% discounts on quite a number of models.

In my opinion, that hobby shop in Bugis Junction is way over priced. its kits can reached up to over $60. Somemore the finished car kits on display sucks...poor workmanship with just lots of clear paints.

They do have 2 nice models on display.. the Warsteiner CLK-DTM and the silver Peugeot 206. The finish on those 2 stands out, and the 206 has photoetched parts.

Heheh... I agree with you man... that shop in Bugis is a rip off... remember the last time when they used to have a huge shop... now its just a little corner... heheh..

The price there is not justified... and if you ask them anytihng abt car models... they then to talk big... try it out... :D

Hmm..If I recall, they didn't clean up all the panel lines on the Peugeot 206.... The CLK though, was pretty good.

For hobby shops, with all the forums now a days, prices are most important, since a wealth of information can be found at various places, and Wong has one of the best prices and range worldwide eh.

Hey Wong, why don't you set up a real shop? You've got a ton of stuff others don't have.

For 1/43s I usually check out F1 World near bugis junction, and for cars I buy them at miniature hobby at marina. I hear they're expecting a bunch of fujimi civics soon. If we can show them there's a demand they'll definitely bring in more fujimi stuff next time. Me, I'll probably get at least 2 civics for myself.

I think the problem with setting up is the rental cost among other problems, and this may cause his prices to go up?

Also, car modellers are still a rather niche market here, not like armour or planes. How many customers can he draw setting up a shop, selling only cars and alcad? Unless we stake out his store everyday...hehe....

What's your idea of the perfect hobby shop? Location? Prices? Range? Service? Bao-ka liao?

well...in my opinion, there cant be a perfect hobby shop for everyone.

location - i will not mind the location because everywhere in singapore is considered near. Preferably the location is easily accessible by public transport.

Prices - i felt that price is extremely important given the fact where most modellers are still students. To me, a kit which cost over $60 in some hobby shop(s) is way too expensive. (their knives are indeed sharp)

Range - of coz the wider the range of kits the better.

Service - internet buying, i have not tried yet due to the fact i do not have a visa or credit card. Troublesome to get bank orders and risking the fact the purchase may not sent to you due to many reasons.

As for hobby shops in Spore, some treats u like glass when u walk in and their common quote is "all stocks on the shelf" or "don't have that in spore".

bao ka liao - there is a price to pay for bao ka liao. of cause everybody will not mind if the price is reasonable.

I think that the most important thing to me is that the staff of the store will let me browse in peace. The staff at Bugis were all over me like a hawk. I don't think i look like a crook.. may have longer than average hair but that's all.

That's why I like the shop at Far East. He lets me browse in peace everytime.

That is very true, and I don't go there much anymore.

There's another shop near redhill where this old lady keeps staring at me non-stop as I browse. One of their staff was even staring at me wide-eyed for at least 10 minutes one day.. I just gave her an angry stare and walked out.

Hi guys and gals,

Thanks for the feedback on the model shop 'survey'. Like Derek said, having a physical shop would increase the cost and price of the items. Hence, I'm staying virtual for the time being. Another reason is I've more overseas customers than local! I guess the locals (myself included :-)) would like to touch and feel before buying. Anyway, give my web-shop (URL below) a look and try. My offer: free postage in Singapore for cash payments.

BTW, if you are looking for Alcad II, drop me an email or PM, I've stock.

Haha,
Actually the shop at Grand Link Square has many accessories and they are many on cars and bikes! Some cars in Singapore can be found only there as other places do not import them. Sorry to say this, but some of their stock are a little over priced. The rest are well worth it! Only that getting there is a little difficult. And the shop owner sometimes open late or is missing for a long time so making me wait outside for so long...

In fact the younger you start, the more experience you will gain slowly and more kits over the years!

I bought my first kits in Pri 6. Back then, very cheap, only $2 for an Airfix helicopter and tank each. Went home and kenna caned by mother because she thought it's a waste of money. Still remember I've asked my big brother for help in applying the decals. No painting, just glue everything and decals. Still very fun. Then Sec school days were better as Hasegawa and Matchbox appeared locally and below $10, can get pretty lot of kits. Army days were productive with more money and time. But U days have to stop because of no money and also looking for gf :-) Unfortunately, after all these years, my skills are still crap! So your theory does not apply to me. I think it's my oily fingers :-(

Wear gloves. :) The surgical kind.

I am very interested in the carbon-fibre decals for the Jag XJR-9LM. I'll be in touch. Still deciding which kit to buy.

How do you guys fight the high humidity here? It really affects the gloss factor. Spray in an air-con room? Or does anyone know where to find a food dehumidifier here?

srlxy
10-25-2002, 08:12 PM
hey,
better not spray in an air con room.
as the fumes are actually poisonous and will react with your body in the long run. do not inhale too much...
I normally spray them in the morning and leave them to dry in the box to prevent dust and other factors...

Err...Tamiya and Gunze paints aren't that hazardous actually, though it may stink. The problem is the moisture in the air reacts with the paint, and causes it to lose out on gloss. If we were in a cooler climate, one would be surprised at how much easier it is to turn out a glossier coat...

well...all along i do not have problems with the gloss on the paints. i do not wax or polich my cars either. Just remember to spray paint during the day only. you can take a look at my (Jason) blue GTR34 in the guest garage of srixy's website, sr-garage.com, just Tamiya Mica blue and clear only.

IMO, the techniques of spray painting is very important to attain smooth, even and glossy paint work.:flamer:

hey guys just came from a trip down in Singapore and decided to check out the R-tuned-in store at Grand Link Square. Just bought about US$100 worth of stuff from there. Very complete store and it was difficult to decide what to buy! Bought 7 sets of rims, s2000 v-spec, tamiya r33 skyline and the Accord Sir wagon. The owner, David, is a really nice guy. So if ever you're in singapore, you definitely have to check that place out if you're a car or bike modeller

Wong,

Regarding the brake discs, its just a mixture of Tamiya spray can, semi-gloss and pure white (straight from the spray can). Nothing difficult about it just that some spraying skills involved. Everybody can do that.:flamer:

Although I am quite aware that I ain't Jason :finger4: (thanks for noticing) :D

But I just put masking tape over the circle thing and cut it out with an exacto. (although sometimes it doesn't turn out circular.

Haha,
Not strange to get lost there.
the first time i went there, i did not know that i have to turn in to Geylang road to enter Grandlink's car park.
Ended up missing the turn and making one big round.
Location is a little inconvinient but well worth the time taken to travel up till there.
The best model car shop in SINGAPORE!
True, the boss is really a great and nice guy!
Chatted with him for more than 2 hours the other day at his shop!
Lucky that he did not think that I was wasting his time...

Darn!~ I don't really know the price well..
But the actual price on the receipt is $10.90, that's what he is charging..
But after he gave 10% off, it was $9.80.

So still overcharge?

Really? Marking up a product then marking it down again is an unethical business practise. Sad to say everyone does it here.

Hi, I am new here. And I am David R Tunedin'. Thanks for your support, will work harder. As for, why sometime I was late open and long gone is because I am 1 man show. Hope you guys understand that I am the only one mend the shop, and no one helps me. Of course the shop is only 7 months old, and I don't think that is the right time to expand my shop to website and getting sales personal.
I actually try to satisfy my customer as much as possible. To get models if there is still chance. Just don't 'fly kite', then that's ok.I like to talk about modelling and cars with my customer. I think it's quite hard for me to have chance talking with Singapore auto modelers. Feel happy when I talk to them, only thing is afraid you guys will say I'm too talkative. :p
For the GT wing, qty is limited. I only order 12 pcs, don't know is it enough. As for the Carbon fiber decal from Fujimi, I might stop bring in, since it is not that good. I will replace it by BBR. It's cheaper.
Most of the customers who walk in to my shop will have automatic 10% off all items, only selected item will get 20%. In fact, now most of my fijimi that are in red tags are on 25%. That's the max. The stock will not lower like MH. Most of the rims (new and old) will be in. EG6 is in. (I know is ex, but my shipping from Jap is ex too.)

Next time when you drop by my shop, could you guys tell me your ID from AF too. So I know who are you. Thanks.
If you guys going for gathering, can anyone call me. I really like to get more friends, especially the auto modeling friends.

Thanks for all your support,
David :) :)
