Check Engine light is on. 1996 Toyota Camry - 4 cylinder.
Mechanic said error message read "Cam shaft position sensor". My car seems to be running fine. They tried to disconnect battery and clear message, but check engine light stayed on. This was just after they changed the distributor gasket due to an oil leak. Not sure if this had anything to do with it or not. Anything that I can try before going to the service center?

Check the connection where the harness plugs into the body of the distributor.

Welcome to the AF!

You can also check the resistance of the camshaft position sensor. Remove the connector:

Cold 835-1400 ohms
Hot 1060-1645 ohms

Sensor is under rear of upper timing belt cover (passenger side). The sensor connector faces the firewall.

Great information, but I must confess - I can't find the sensor. Any chance of spoon feeding me a little more direction on where it is located?

Look from underneath the engine up behind and under the upper timing cover where the timing cover extends over the intake cam pulley, next to and below the #1 cylinder injector - toward the belts - on the same side of the engine as the injectors.
