If offered a safe place to street race, do you think people would still continue to street race illegaly?
Also why do YOU street race, if you do?

a safe place? you mean like at a race track?
people still race illegally even though there are race tracks all over the country. Problem is, there isnt many tracks to make it convienent... and they're usually placed out in the boondocks so its a slight pain to get to them.

Yea, and most tracks only have like 3 days open for dragging. And if you wanted to get on the track any other day it costs big money.

The local track here has adopted a midnight drag program. On certain friday nights, they have drags. This is good. But, with only 300 slots available, and over 1500 people wanting to race. It just doesnt work out.

People would still street race, even if it was open every day. It's like this, you have a fast car and someone pulls up next to you with what looks like a fast car. You just want to race right then and there, fuck going to the track right then you'd probably have to wait in line. So yeah it would still happen.

I agree with the concensus of the thread. As long as someone thinks they're tough on the street, and you think you can take them, there will still be street racing. It's part adrenaline, part pride. Neither of those factors will wait for a trip to the track. Going to the track proves just how good of a driver you are.

hey thats what most people in teams do. AOR!!!! even though non of the rest of my team mates are activitly racing anymore. actually i'm the only one who goes to some what organized races, when my friends just take it right here right now kinda of thing. i think they're just gettin old. but they're all my age!!!!

Yup. If somebody pulls up to me revving his engine, I'm not gonna say "no not here. lets drive an hour to the track". Organized racing is a little better cuz the bitches typically can't drive off w\o paying cuz a moderator holds the $. That's the only reason I'd take it to the track. but the nearest drag track is in Kansas City, 2 hours away.

We get a lot of illegal organised street drags over here in NZ. They meet up at a certain point every Saturday night (spot changes depending on whether the police have been tipped off or not). If there were a place specifically built for racing that was free to enter and didn’t have to be booked in advance I’m sure it would cut out a lot of that sort of racing. What it wouldn’t cut out would be the sort of situations where someone pulls up to you at a set of lights (like DeViL said).

This is a bogus question because no "safe place" would ever be offered! Just like skate parks, cities frown upon catering to fringe groups like performance car enthusiasts. Who would insure these places? Its just too difficult a project for officials, police, insurance, etc. to even think about... so they try to eliminate the behavior alltogether.

The Mayor of Christchurch is thinking of building a drag strip out of the main part of town that street racers will be able to go to. By doing this he figures that it will cut out the drag racing/burn out comps that go on at the moment. Considering that a lot of the street racers drive about the same amount of time to get into town he figures that they would then drive the same amount of time to get to the drag strip. Hopefully it will go ahead and become a success and then other cities might think about doing the same thing instead of trying to stop it all together.

Sorry Spec, I always forget that this forum is international, and that oficial's attitudes vary greatly from country to country. I hope the idea works, and that our country & state officials take notice.

The nearest drag strip is about an hour away and you have to pay and book that one.

My friend that used to live in New Zeland says that cops will stop chasing you after a while if you keep running... is that true?

Supposedly it is, the highspeed chases get too dangerous and the cops don't want to put people in danger swerving around them. They may stop but you damn well better believe they aren't finished with you. I'd say they will get helicopters and stuff to tract you down instead.

Not totally sure, but I would imagine if it got to the stage where it was looking dangerous they would stop, but I they’d catch you eventually. As DeViL said they wouldn’t let you get away with it.

oh... not as glamorous as he put... He also describes NZ as 'paradise'... sounds really enticing... whats your take of it, Spec2 Girl? I've been to Australia and NZ(I think), but my memories are faint due to my years that have passed. I'd really like to live in Austrailia or NZ for a while in the future though.

New Zealand is really nice. Apparently the South Island has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. I've yet to visit so I don't know. Auckland to me is very much like a smaller, less populated Sydney (where I lived for 13 years). I'm sure you would enjoy either country.

why street race ?
only rule that counts is winner takes all
win by an inch......win by a mile.........
first across the finishline reaps the rewards
and no funky breakout rule
there is no such thing as a safe place
spectators and drivers alike that paid to get into tracks have been killed all around the world. sorry it's just the nature of the beast
