Ferrari's 60th group build. Tamiya Enzo.mikemechanic 02-26-2007, 11:45 PM Ok, here we go. This is my first WIP on any forum. I figure after this many posts in others it's time to do my own. I started this kit about 1 year ago and it has sat since the group build announcement. I purchased the SMS super detail set quite awhile ago and am using it on this build. I am using several of the builds here and of cours Alex's site as reference. I also signed up at ferrarichat as it is a great resource for all Ferrari pics and owners that are willing to answer any questions. I recieved a lathe for my birthday and have managed to lathe out a few parts so far for this build to compliment the already nice stuff that comes with the SMS set. First up are the body panels, all have been painted Cobra Colors Rosso Corsa (sorry, it's a red Ferrari) and cleared using automotive 2-part clear. I wet sanded and polished using micromeshes great set and finished with Tamiya's compound. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_0226Image0126.jpg Secondly is the engine, sprayed with metalizer aluminum and metalizer sealer. Valve covers were sprayed with some metal texture spray from Wal-Mart and then primed white and sprayed with Rosso Scuderia and Model Master flat lacquer. Added the photo-etch fuel rail and machined out the black disc on the top of the trans. Also machined out some CV joints and primed and painted them with Alclad pale gold. SMS carbon fiber was added and Tamiya's metal transfers. Cover the cf with Microscale Gloss. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_0226Image0120.jpg Next is the chassis. Using a picture from ferrarichat I covered the rear section with cigarette foil paper. And then installed the window, and added the photoetch firewall shielding from SMS. I added some metal foil to the fuse/electrical boxes in the rear corners. I scratchbuilt the fuel vapour seperator on the firewall using some pics from the owners manual. It's my first real try with scratchbuilding and I am relatively happy with the results. I also scratchbuilt the wiring harnesses coming out of the fuse boxes. Added a fuel filler neck and then wrapped it in wrinkled up foil like in the reference pictures. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_0226Image0123.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/DSC00316.jpg Here are the undertray and floor section covered in SMS carbon fiber, I have coated the front section with Metalizer sealer and a few coats of Tamiya smoke. I added all the photoetched rivets. This is my first try with carbon fiber decals and so far ok. Still working on the rear undertray. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_0226Image0121.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_0226Image0122.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_0226Image0125.jpg And here is a shot of the test fitting so far. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_0226Image0124.jpg Hopefully I can keep regular up dates and will start my F50 thread soon. Thanks for looking and all comments welcome. Mike. Enzoenvy1 02-27-2007, 12:32 AM A damn man, now I want to finish mine too! I hate this site, makes you realize that you have too many kits to build. Who knows, maybe I could pull 3 off this year?! Looking great by the way. I know how much time that kit takes with the SMS on top of it. Fun build though, looks really nice! Keeping stuck on this thread. slopine 02-27-2007, 01:20 AM Looks fantastic. What's this metal texture spray you mentioned? Any more pics of it? slk320 02-27-2007, 09:48 PM Looks fantastic! The CF looks great and the engine is fatastic! Jamme 02-28-2007, 01:37 AM Really nice Job on that Enzo. :grinyes: :grinyes: :grinyes: Jamme CeeElle 02-28-2007, 02:35 AM very impressive. that kit terrifies me -- all that CF! johanthemodeler 02-28-2007, 11:07 AM Looking really great now I envy you that the tamiya looks so much better and almost regret that I didn' start with the tamiya instead of the revell. But it's also probably most the fantastic building skills that makes it look soo nice. Johan mikemechanic 02-28-2007, 11:00 PM Looks fantastic. What's this metal texture spray you mentioned? Any more pics of it? The brand is Excel, it is just textured spray for plastic, metal, etc. I think it's just for texturing outdoor plastic furniture (to give that metal look) I just noticed after closer inspection that the frame rails that I foiled are actually cf. :banghead: I peeled off most of the foil and cf'd those pieces. I cf'd the upper air box using Tamiya's supplied decals and it actually looks pretty good. A nice grey tone to it and they settled down nice with microsol. Thanks for the encouragement guys. More updates with pics to follow. Mike. AllAlone.Gz 03-01-2007, 04:08 AM what compound did you use? Fine,Coarse,Finish? Looks nice! tonioseven 03-01-2007, 01:53 PM Mike, this is looking great so far!!:sunglasse Your cf work is terrific!:) mikemechanic 03-03-2007, 08:04 PM Small Update: Got the rear brake rotors done today. SMS photoetched items. They want you to stack 3 seperate discs to give the rotor some height in the middle, so I just lathed out a piece from aluminum rod instead. Driled the six holes in them using my pin vise. My camera can't seem to focus on them that well but they look way better in person. Sprayed the rotors with Finisher's carbon black and then rubbed with graphite powder. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_0305Image0144.jpg Here is a shot of the chassis with the cf added instead of the foil, also added a piece of photoetch as the VIN plate on the rear rail. Added the SMS reservoir cap, somebody really should cast these things. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_0303Image0134.jpg Thanks for looking, and comments and tips are always welcome. Mike. EDIT-Figured out the camera, new pic of the brakes. OrangeR 03-04-2007, 01:00 AM Great Enzo! Was it hard to bend the SMS PE firewall? Thanks for showing the Finisher's carbon black color I can really see now that is a good representation. mikemechanic 03-04-2007, 03:46 PM Great Enzo! Was it hard to bend the SMS PE firewall? Thanks for showing the Finisher's carbon black color I can really see now that is a good representation. Actually it was easier than I thought, I just laid it on there and bent it at the corners and kind of eyeballed the rest. The Finisher's carbon black is alot more black then I thought it was going to be. I think it would also make a great base for cf decals. Mike. OrangeR 03-04-2007, 03:59 PM Thanks Mike! Got to buy me some finisher's paints :) robrex 03-04-2007, 04:44 PM Nice work Mike! Good to see that lathe is getting some work! Jamme 03-05-2007, 01:51 AM Nice. I like the engine compartment. Jamme mikemechanic 04-08-2007, 10:26 PM Happy Easter all and time for an update. Been busy making FXX shocks so it took me away from this build. Here's where I am at with those. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_04030011.jpg Anyways onto the Enzo. Got alot of carbon fiber decals on, boy this really takes time. Here is the underside of the rear decklid, and a better shot of those rear discs. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_04080024.jpg Rear wheel houses and dash. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_04080022.jpg Upper dash section with mesh installed and rear interior wall. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_04080023.jpg Took a break from the cf decals and did some photoetching, here the pedals are installed. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_04080021.jpg Installed the engine into the chassis, painted and weathered the exhaust (Tamiya set D). Wrapped the convertors in foil. Drilled some holes and installed some Scale Hardware simulated stud and nuts. Installed SMS rear shocks, I really didn't like the braided hose that SMS supplied for the rear shock reservoirs so I made my own "braided" looking lines and glued those in. SMS stuff was completely flat and looked more like ground straps to me. Scratchbuilt some fule lines and dipped them in Plastidip (thanks Robrex) and attached those to the fuel rails. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_04080017.jpg Thanks for looking, comments and suggestions always welcome. Mike. MidMazar 04-08-2007, 11:46 PM Nice touch, cant wait to build my kit along with the sms kit. Will have to follow your thread if thats alright? Coming along nicely, and the cf work is great. Good luck. robrex 04-09-2007, 12:13 AM Nice progress Mike. Those brake discs do look very good! klutz_100 04-09-2007, 12:51 AM Great work  tonioseven 04-09-2007, 07:44 AM Coming along very nicely Mike!:sunglasse mach1_2003 04-09-2007, 08:26 AM Looks awesome. Great work on all the CF decal. slk320 04-09-2007, 11:18 AM Great progress - could we get some close-up photos? mikemechanic 04-16-2007, 11:44 PM Great progress - could we get some close-up photos? Seems that this is as close as I can get with my camera. Any pointers would be much appreciatted. Time for another update. Doors and door panels are finished up, just need to add the lower black section to the bottom of the door. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_04160001.jpg Spent the weekend finishing up the engine cover/air intake assembly. Also drilled out the center of the wheels on one side of the car, I want to add it to a small base with the wheels on one side off. The screws I bought at the railroad hobby shop here in town about a year ago, finally got up enough nerve to do it. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_04160002.jpg Got the interior done, seat belts are added, scratch built the map pocket between the seats. Special thanks to Ali Haas for sending me a pic of his Enzo owners manual so I could reduce it and add it to the map pocket. It looks better than the pictures show, something with the light and the ink in the pic that makes it look wierd. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_04160003.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_04160004.jpg Also got the dash all together and decaled. The light and camera also made the instruments look wierd. Assembled the rear photoetch latches for the rear engine cover and painted them semi-gloss black. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_04160005.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e318/mikemechanic/2007_04160007.jpg I test fitted the doors to the chassis and I have to hand it to Tamiya the fit is perfect and the doors work perfectly. I think any car modeler should build this kit as it is a pure joy to build (even with the added headache of the SMS set) It looks like everything is coming together nicely and hopefully will be done soon. Thanks for looking. Mike. Murray Kish 04-17-2007, 01:05 AM Nice work Mike. Gonna be a beauty for sure. Murray bvia 04-17-2007, 02:08 AM SMS stuff was completely flat and looked more like ground straps to me. Mike. IIRC, you're supposed to thread a small diameter wire or solder into the braiding. That gives it the 3-d appearance and allows the braiding to be formed and hold it's shape. hth, Bill klutz_100 04-17-2007, 03:35 AM Really excellent! deltableh 04-17-2007, 10:48 AM To get closer, try setting your camera to Macro or Super-Macro... mine lets me focus on stuff that's 1cm away from the lens. The macro logo is usually a flower, by the way. mikemechanic 04-17-2007, 12:35 PM IIRC, you're supposed to thread a small diameter wire or solder into the braiding. That gives it the 3-d appearance and allows the braiding to be formed and hold it's shape. hth, Bill Yeah I tried that Bill, I wanted to give it some form but the wire I tried threading through kept poking through the braid and causing it to fray apart. Not sure what Detail Masters stuff is like and this is the first time I tried using braided hose. Live and learn I guess. Mike. mikemechanic 04-17-2007, 12:38 PM To get closer, try setting your camera to Macro or Super-Macro... mine lets me focus on stuff that's 1cm away from the lens. The macro logo is usually a flower, by the way. The pictures were taken on Macro. My camera does not have Super Macro. The manual says Macro is for 10cm to 1 meter. If I get any closer it is just a large blur and the AF sign comes on, it won't focus untill about 10cm away. I am happy with the pictures as far as close-ups go. I know Paul wanted closer but I think this is as good as I can get with my set-up. Mike. ales 04-17-2007, 12:46 PM Mike, fabulous build. As a suggestion, you can try moving your camera smewhat further but zooming in on the object. If you have a tripod, that is. mikemechanic 04-17-2007, 09:31 PM Mike, fabulous build. As a suggestion, you can try moving your camera smewhat further but zooming in on the object. If you have a tripod, that is. Thanks Ales. Do you leave the camera in regular mode or zoom in while in Macro mode? Mike. drunken monkey 04-17-2007, 10:16 PM you don't need to be in macro when you use the zoom. in fact, compact digital cameras' macro modes aren't usually that good for taking photos' of small objects because of very shallow focal length and severe vignetting. if you get yourself a cheap tripod, you can position camera maybe two feet away and get right in with the zoom to get an undistorted image AND not get in the way of your light source. ales 04-18-2007, 03:09 AM Try several ways and see which one you like most. Personally I use full (albeit, rather modest) zoom of my camera and macro mode most of the time. Jaimenew 04-18-2007, 03:08 PM Excellent details, it is seen very well vrossi85 04-18-2007, 09:55 PM Looks really really nice!! May i know what did you use for the hose connecting the fuse box on the right of the chasis? Ro auw12 04-19-2007, 07:49 AM Absolutely fantastic works so far! mikemechanic 04-19-2007, 09:53 AM Looks really really nice!!
