replacing my GTO engine

i have a 76' GTO and i wanted to know if i could put in a newer 2000 engine to save fuel costs, but i wanted to know if i could do this w/out ruining the car in any way shape or form

Hate to break it to you but they stopped making GTOs in 1974 (some say earlier) and didn't start again till 2004 so it'd be kind of hard to have a '76 GTO.
