2002 Rodeo V6 - Failing IMG symptoms?

132K miles, new plugs, new EGR, new O2 sensors, clean<ed> injectors, coils test OK, new fuel filter and so on. Once warm, truck stalls at every stop. Once in a while, idle ramps up to 2k rpm then drops immediately to zip and engine quits unless given gas. No underhood sounds out of the ordinary, I've read here that a failing gasket will cause a whistling noise? Truck seems to run ok on the highway. Anywhere I can point the dealer to investigate other than the IMG?

If you take it to the dealer they will know what to look for (I'm sure they replace a gasket once or twice a week, since it is very common). They will do a leak check with carb cleaner.

The 2 times I had mine replaced, it made no noise, ran fine, expect sometimes it would want to start and sometimes it died when I came to a stop.

The dealer really couldn't diagnose it but it was the gasket. It is being replaced by a local mechanic as I write this.

The gasket that failed was the upper gasket on the passenger side. The hole was at the very front of the gasket behind the timing belt cover. There was no noise and the carburetor spray didn't do a thing when the dealer tried that. On a hunch, the local guy took the timing belt cover off and the noise was obvious. Oddly, the gaskets appeared to be in great shape except for that one hole.

Just out of curiosity - did they show you the old gasket? Have pics? If you don't mind telling what the cost, labor (hrs) etc was? I'm a little curious as I am one of about 5 rodeo owners I know.

I think the dealer charges like 350 to do it.
