Both the jetta and golf are produced on the A3 series platform, they have identical mechanical abilities except that the jetta is available with the Vr6 while only the GTi (2 door) is available with it, the regular golf is stuck with the 2.0 8v motor or diesel. I believe that the golf isn't available with rear disc's, while a jetta will get them on the GLX (Vr6) and the K2, GT, and Trek models (2.0). if you are going for the Mk4. (A4 platform) you can get the 1.8t motor from audi in all of the models. Basically if you want a sedan and are looking for fine german engeneering you should get a jetta, the vr6 is a powerful motor that is very torquey (rare in a small motor) and the jettas get rear disc brakes on Mk3 (1993-1999) while all Mk4 (1999.5-2005?) get rear disc's. If you are on a budget look for a low mile GT or K2 edition, it is loaded, the 2.0 is great on gas and normally bullet proof, but severally lacking in the power section. happy hunting any Q's just ask!
