Perfect idle, mis-fire while driving?

I've been helping my uncle repair his 88 tempo. He had to put a new distributor in it. For some reason or another, it would not time correctly at 15*, after much trial and error we got it sorted out, yet according to the flywheel we aren't even close to the timing marks. However the car no longer spits or sputters at idle anymore. We figured we fixed it, took it out for a spin, car felt like it was missing, badly. We ran the codes through the car, only ones came up at KOER, EGR valve stuck closed IIRC, and what appears to be O2 sensor reading rich constantly. These couldn't be the cause could it? Anyone suffered this problem, how did you fix it?

Might've damaged a plug wire boot. When you put it under load the voltage increases enough to jump to ground.
