Trans. no reverse or neutral....

Ok im back again with my 1992 Plymouth Laser, 2.0, N/T, automatic transmission. For some reason all of sudden the car will not go in reverse or neutral. Checked fluids, they are ok. Removed cecnter consol, checked main cable, inside and under hood and they checked out ok. Aslo checked the cable adjustment at the transmission and that checked out ok as well. When the car is running in park, before the car has been shifted at all, it seams ok. When the car is running and put into reverse the car will not move but it sounds like it is in gear. With the car running in neutral, when pressing the gas down the car will move forward. When the car is running the shifter into reverse and neutral there is a buzzing noise like low power steering fluid, but when in L an 2 the car has no buzzing. When attempting to drive forward, at normal exceleration speed, in drive, the car shifts from the lowest drive to drive ok. Also, shifts fine on its own in drive when acceleration from stand still in all three(3) gears. But when manually shifting from L to 2 the car shifts fine but when shifting from 2 to Drive the engine RPM's will rise and will take a second or two to actually shift into drive, then goes into gear ok. What could be making this car not shift into reverse and nutural, and making my nutural into a Drive.

When was the last time you serviced the tranny? Try changing the fluid and filter and see if that helps. Otherwise either the tranny seals are out or the torque converter took a shit.

Will it hurt to drive it only in forward??? Or will this cause more problems???

Well if the tranny is on the way out, it will eventually just completely take a shit, but you could try it I guess.

Yay for sumbforums......

I dont know much about auto trannies but my guess is if it wont go into reverse, its good and fucked. A tranny specialist can help ya out with that one.

If you are able to, then go for it. You could end up doing more damage, but it sounds like the damage has already been done to the point where you will probably need it rebuilt or a different tranny anyway. If it was me and I was in your situation and needed to drive a car, I would drive it until it completely stopped working.

Well would you mind sharing what was the problem and how you fixed it so that if anyone else looks at this thread 3 years down the road they know how to fix it instead of resurrecting a dinosaur of a thread.

:eek7:

Well, I can't figure out a legitimate way to shift hard from park to reverse from a standstill... So I'm gonna assume you threw it into park then reverse while moving?

That's prooooobably not a good thing. I wouldn't trust it to last more than 100 miles like that.

^ok... Actually, this kind of makes sense... I don't know how things in an auto work exactly... but I had this problem out of my Stealth...

I had a problem with the car going into 5th and reverse (manual)... I'm assuming that one of the shift forks or shafts wasn't completely aligned...
I lost reverse, and had lost if for 2-3 months... I was at work one day, and I got really pissed off (it was emberassing to not have it and have the car grinding and shit)... and I slammed the car into reverse as hard as I could...
it grinded like hell for the first second or two... then things aligned, and I had both gears...
It put a hell of a lot of wear on the synchro, but I recovered the gears, and didn't have a problem out of those gears...

^later, I rebuilt the tranny... then got in a wreck and lost 3-4 (roll pins on shift fork and synchros), and then the transmission began to self-destruct... taking some of the casing with it...

Oh, fuck me! How could I have commited such a crime against humanity? Damn, I wish I was perfect like you Mikelb!

Thor, this is your last warning... I've had to correct you a lot here lately, one more time and I'll have to ban you... ;)

j/k, Thor you smart ass... lol
