87 honda accord jumping tachometer & no power to fuel pump

I have an 87 honda accord. I was driving one day when I had a sudden loss of power and then a return to normal operation. Later that day, I noticed that the tachometer was jumping.

A few weeks later, the car died and would not start. It was not getting fuel. I checked the power line from the ignition coil to the fuel relay switch - no power. Per the recommendation of a mechanic, I replaced the ignition coil.

After replacing the coil, the car ran normally, but the tachometer continued to jump. Days later, the car died again - same symptoms.

If I supply power to the fuel pump, the car will start and run normally for a random length of time.

I have searched the internet for clues and I have found suggestions relating to the ignition module, the distributer, the alternator and the fuel pump. (one note of interest is that I replaced the alternator about 2 months before this problem occured).

Please help!

It sounds like there is a bad ground somewhere.

I would also check the alternator. Should be 14.6 volts when running.

Good luck!

Sam
