1990 Geo Metro, 3 Cyc, auto, air

The problem occurs only on very cold mornings. The car starts normally (this is without warm up). I back the car out of the driveway and then put it into drive and apply gas. it hesitates as though I hadn't applied gas. I thought that is was me at first, foot not on the accelerator pedal. A little hesitation and then the car takes off and acts normally. Is this because the automatic transmission fluid is cold and takes time to build up pressure? And Or slippage? No, on second thought, that wouldn't be it, the engine doesn't rev up when I apply gas. Any suggestions?
