Police Auctions: NO

Car Auctions -- Absolutely, but only if you have a couple of grand cash on top of what you're spending on the vehicle. You can get some real deals by buying them wholesale, but you need some reconditioning money. If it's at the auction, there is probably something wrong with it.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. It's better to get a $10k car at an auction and invest $2k in repairs than to buy the same car from a dealership, reconditioned but not as well as your $2k will do, for $13k or $14k.

Dealerships -- if you're financing or don't have money for repairs, stick with a dealership or an individual.

BTW, most police auctions are no longer actually police auctions, but rather a ton of cars accumulated by a towing company that is affiliated with a police department. Usually 1 out of 10 are actual police impounds.
