Hello everyone I made a post earlier but I have had no progress, so I thought I would post an update. My 1998 Lumina LTZ - 3.8 liter, wont shift into gear. My friend as well as jeffcoslacker (from these forums) thought that the soleniod might be the issue. So I took a look at it, I think I am looking at the correct part because there is a bunch of wires comming out of this unit. I tried using some Silicone spray to lube up the part but I still can't shift into gear. =( As I said on my earlier post the gear shifter itself was taken apart and rebuilt from sratch by a mechanic at an eariler date but that didn't solve the issue either.

Thanks for any help,
Branon

Can you hear the solenoid click when you step on the brake?

I think you are looking at the electrical part of the selector harness, the solenoid should only have maybe two wires to it.

Alright, there has been so much snow in Denver lately that it has prevented me from looking at my car, however the snow has cleared. I see the solenoid. When I press in the sensor that the brake is attached to, the gear shifter gets stuck, when I let it go it works again. The whole soleniod system seems to be lose though. I can wiggle the whole box without putting much pressure on it.

I have put pictures on photobucket.com for you guys to check out... hopefully they will help. I don't see anything physcially wrong with the solenoid besides it being lose. Anyways, here they are. Secondly if it is the solenoid, can I pick up one of those at checker auto parts? Or how do I repair it?

i had the same problem with my '97 lumina.....it would go into gear, but the gears didnt match (R was drive and so forth).....i drove it anyway, and then i need a new transmission LOL.....anywho, either the linkage needs to be tightened, or you need a new shifting cable.....i would bet its just the tranny getting ready to go though, as i stated.........also, dont be stubborn like me.....not only did i need a new tranny, but from still driving it after 1st shift went, i also needed a new engine when i blew the head gasket LOL.....the things ppl do just to get to work and feed a family :-)
