Cam Belt vs Chain DrivenRememberme 01-05-2007, 03:16 PM Which is the best to buy? Cam belt or chain driven cars? How do I know which are which? Is there a website that will tell me that?:) Thanks. PlayStation3 01-06-2007, 12:20 AM there is no real total difference now a days. the difference mostly is the service intervole is different. roughly 70k for the belt and 100k for the chain. most cars use the belt, saturn and a couple others still use chains Rememberme 01-06-2007, 04:04 AM there is no real total difference now a days. the difference mostly is the service intervole is different. roughly 70k for the belt and 100k for the chain. most cars use the belt, saturn and a couple others still use chains Thanks. Umm, does that mean the chain needs replacing too and is it likely to be similar in cost to do so? PlayStation3 01-06-2007, 09:16 AM yea the cost is pretty much the same. Rememberme 01-06-2007, 12:59 PM yea the cost is pretty much the same. Thanks, this helps me a lot in the choosing of a car :) MT-2500 01-06-2007, 01:14 PM Which is the best to buy? Some belt replacements are cheap and some can get expensive and some if the belt breaks it can bend valves and blow engine. Some cars belt or chain the water pump is driven with the belt and chain another thing that may have to be replaced. For example A 98 chev cavalier 4 cyl 2.4 engine the timing chain has to be remover to change the water pump. I just changed the water pump on one at 108911 miles. With a new water pump and new timing chain over 600.00$ US parts and labor If it has a belt always follow the manf. specs on belt replacement. Good luck Rememberme 01-06-2007, 01:41 PM A lot would depend on the year make and model and engine.
