RB20 stuffSnakeyes39 09-22-2002, 08:09 PM alright, i'm new here, i just read through some of your RB20 stuff and i got a question for someone who has done this swap before. alright, i took someone's advice about using a skyline crossmember instead of buying custom motor mounts. i couldn't find a skyline one, but i did manage to get a laural one, which has bolted up just fine, so i think a cefiro crossmember will work as well for anyone who would like to know for later on. also, if u think the engine is sitting alyl too high, u can put some 10mm spacers in there to lower the crossmember some. but my question is about the powersteering lines. i got a '90 240, and i don't know if i should cut my powersteering lines shorter since they are used to being on the opposite side of the engine. i figure one of them just shorten the line, but the other one has a sensor on it. i wanna know if it's ok to cut that one, or do i have to find another way to get it to the right side of the engine. dohctor_yaj 09-24-2002, 04:04 PM ssup man...nice to see another AF member hookin up their 240 with a rb20... a few questions...what do you mean by cutting your power steering lines? i'm just planning on getting a pipe bender and make my own lines if we're talkin bout the same subject... did your motor come with HICAS? cus i think most r32's came with HICAS and you know your 240 isn't right? well, i was told i need either the rb25det or ka24de's power steering pump cus my HICAS rb20det power steering pump wont work... so how's your car coming along? did you get the JPNZ workshop manual or how are you going to do your wires? Snakeyes39 09-25-2002, 12:51 AM we probably are talking about the same thing when it comes to the powersteering lines. the lines are used to being on the left side of the engine, and now the pump is on the right side so i gotta shorten them, it's just that one of them has a sensor on it, and i'm not sure if that sensor is really necessary or not. and i don't think my engine came with hicas. i pulled it out of my old cefiro, which i don't remember having hicas, and before that it was in a laural. i might have to check on that. also, i wasn't aware that i'd have to rewire anything. i never had my wiring harness cut and i have the ECU to go with the engine. so far i haven't done much for the swap since i've been waiting to hear what i should do about the lines. how about yourself? are u doing the swap yourself or what? and if i need to rewire anything, can u point me in the direction to see what i need to do. thanks dohctor_yaj 09-25-2002, 04:57 PM well right now i'm in the hunt for either a ka24de power steering or the rb25det's...kinda sucks...and i dont even know how well they're gonna fit... anyways, about the wiring, i did get my whole wire harness too cus i did get the front clip but i'm just worried about the rear wires and a stuff and how i'm gonna hook them up to the new ECU...so i'm planning on getting that JPNZ manual and hope it helps... you said you have all the wires uncut..do you mean every single wire from the orginal car? or just all the wires from the dash area to the engine area? I'm doing the swap myself but not till this coming spring break...i'm still looking for cash for a LSD, clutch, flywheel, FMIC and other little stuff...besides i need a car to drive around this winter... so how far are you on your swap then? are most of your wires hooked up? Snakeyes39 09-27-2002, 10:42 AM the swap is going very slow lately. just got this job and i'm workin 6 days a week. finally got up to put the engine into the car the other night, but couldn't find one of my bolts to my engine mount.....but we did get some spacers down on the mount, dropped it about 4mm, hoping that'll clear the room for the hood. also got the triple plate clutch on the engine, just hope i did it right. i'm thinking this sunday imma try to drop it in again. about the wiring, i got everything that plugs into my ECU uncut. not so sure about the rear wires though, i thought that stuff would be taken care of at the fuse box right next to the battery. i'll let u know how things go, and would u know anyplace i can get a bolt from, cuz autozone and pepboys don't have the exact same bolt i'm looking for. dohctor_yaj 09-28-2002, 01:43 PM sorry bro...no i wouldn't know where to get a that bolt... anyways, are you getting a FMIC? which one? i'm looking at the griffin top to bottom flow 24x8x3 for $560...i was thinking of waiting for unstable hybrids to make a front penlum but not sure when they will get it out...they said it should be ready by november...so if its cheap, then i'll get that and a side to side FMIC...if not then the top to bottom flow... hey where did you get your clutch? how much? thanks Snakeyes39 09-28-2002, 11:05 PM most of the things i've got for my car are used. i have no problem with going the ghetto way about things, i don't have much cash to throw around. before i left japan i managed to grab an R33 FMIC, R34 fuel pump, bran new radiator like about 2 an 1/2 inch thick or so, LSD, JIC coilover suspension, nismo triple plate clutch, also went ahead and grabbed most of the pieces for the sil80 conversion, now all i need to get is a hood and the g-corporation front bumper, and that about sums it up. now i'm just trying to get the piping for the cooler, not sure how much that's gonna cost me. wanna get the pdm 300zx brakes package, some nismo control arms, upgraded ECU, i'm not really looking for the most hp i can get, just enough to have fun with and not kill myself while driftin the corners :) how about u? what do u have in mind for your RB? SR20DETpower 09-29-2002, 11:32 AM has anyone here driven an RB20DET powered 240 and driven a SR20DET powered 240? I was wondering what the driveability differences are from smeone who has tested both engines. Seems like you can get rb's for cheaper almost but the install seems more complicated and customized then the SR swap. Id like to put in a SR but never know what engine Ill end up buying, maybe even a RB25 with a T3/4 and RB26 heads =0 Im sure that would turn some heads. I don't need wads of torque, only thing thats good for is Wreckless driving tickets lol. But I do need daily driver reliablity and for it to be quick. Its a must that the car goes faster then atleast an Impala SS. I would be using your basic mods such as intake, good exaust, FMIC, under drive pulleys... thats basically it for bolt ons... all that with the turbo at maximum effeciency should be able to take on that Impala if I get good traction, whats your thoughts....... Snakeyes39 09-29-2002, 01:43 PM well if cheap is what u want, why not try a CA even though it's a 1.8 that engine can really push. the most i've heard of coming out of a CA was around 650 and i couldn't tell u how much the guy put into his engine. basically, if u go to japan yourself and buy the engine, you could probably find a RB20 or a CA18 for around 500 bucks. RB takes more money to put into the car because the fact that it wasn't meant to be in there. CA just bolts right in. an old SR out of a S13 would cost at least 1000, even though i've heard from a few friends of mine that they got it for 500, i still haven't seen one for that price. and when u try to get the S14 and S15 SR's, u're gonna be paying some cash. all in all i say everyone of those 3 are good engines, i wouldn't mind using either one. there's 2 main reasons why i chose my RB. one, i already had it, it was in my cefiro and i crashed that thing about a month before i came here, but engine stayed intact. second, when u hear my RB coming down the street compared to an SR or CA, u'll see why i chose it. as for your drivability thing, i'm pretty sure u might wanna go with the CA or SR because i've heard that since the wieght of the RB is a bit heavier, it throws off the wieght distibution. which is why i want some to change out most of my steering parts with new ones, and i plan to add a few pounds to the back to make up for the extra pounds in the front. SR20DETpower 09-29-2002, 01:56 PM yeah I heard the rb series engines sound better, but I've never heard an of them in person revving up or racinig so hard decision to make based on what people say on a message board. I would like to get a S14 sr20 but probably end up getting a redtop one(paint the top silver like the Signal Auto S15(sweeeeeet) so it matches the block. I've got a good parts cleaner that makes everything look brand new after it goes into this machine, sorry I don't know the name of it cause I don't really work there all the time. Its bigger then your average stand alone freezer inside and it normally cleans transmission housings, so It will clean a engine block up nicely. I hear the Sr has more revs and less torque, hows the RB series and torque? I know its a higher displacement but engines are always different, a 3.0 Dodge v6 in a minivan isn't the same as a 3.0 300z motor lol...... SR20DETpower 09-29-2002, 01:58 PM also on a side note I don't really like the CA much, not putting it down I just don't personally like it......... Id rather go with an SR or RB. Installation wouldn't be that much of a problem since my dad owns a mechanic shop and tools and all that stuff is all right there. Just need to get the parts. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
