'97 2.0 automatic/626 smokes at start-up?

Hi guyz , why is there smoke out the tail pipe when I start it up (cold)? It is a smelly grey/blue colour . After the engine warms up it goes away ? The check engine light was on when I bought it , the battery was disconnected & then the light didn't go back on .The AC doesn't go on when I press the defrost button either ? AC isn't blowing cold when the button is pressed either ? Tough to keep the condensation clear when driving too ? It has 250 kms on the engine .

I do not know about the A/C problem but the smoke on start up is the same for all cars, your valve seals are bad.
As the car sits for a time the oil in the valve train leaks down past the valve seals into the cylinders and gets burned on startup, cars can usually last for quite some time like this though you'll need to keep an eye on your oil level since your engine will be burning some a little at a time, as things progress you'll smoke all the time and will then need to have the seals replaced.
