Check engine light

I have a 93 impreza, still runs real good but the check engine light is on how can i check it. it isnt obd II.

If I remember correctly the box is under dash and has a Red light on it you turn on key and count blinks
I think it is the standard long and short blinks
I had a early 90's loyale that had that set up
