I'm glad I found this site. I did a search for the problem I'm having and followed the advice. I still have the prob.
I have a 93 Lumina 3.1 It runs good at speed, but at idle it surges and dies. I took off the throttle body (battery disconnected) and cleaned it along with the IAC valve. When I took the hose from the air cleaner box to the TB off I noticed it had gas in it. I've never seen that before and I've had it off alot as I do most of my own mantainance. Anyway I get it all back together and start the relearn process. The car runs (some surging) for 6/7 min then dies. Restart and drop into drive and a couple of min later it dies again. I seen gas dripping out of the TB as the relearn process was going on. I had the air cleaner hose off to check for coolant leaks from the TB. I can get a new AIC valve for $36 but I'd rather not just go replacing parts without some input from you all. BTW the car ran for 20 min or so and the rad fans never came on (55 degrees outside today). Is that normal?
Thanks for reading this.

To test the IAC valve you need a good engine capable scanner.
Or a IAC valve tester.
Also check for codes and post back code no.
On most the engine tempt will need to get up to or over 220 degrees for the fan to kick on with AC off.
Does the fan run with AC on?

Thanks for the replies. I don't have a engine capable scanner or an IAC valve tester. There is no CEL coming on so I don't have any codes. I'll start the car and turn on the AC tomorrow and see if the fans come on. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

gas in the throttle body area isn't a good sign. The upper plenum is air only, so fuel should never get in there. I would look at the vacuum hose running to the fuel pressure regulator. If there is fuel present there, the FPR has developed a leak and need replacing. That would explain your irradic idle as well.

richtazz; I'll check the FPR tomorrow also

When you cleaned the IAC, did you disassemble it?

http://72.19.213.157/files/IACDisassembled.jpg

Disassemble as shown, clean the core of the stepper motor, lightly lubricate the pintle rack gear with 1-2 drops of clean engine oil, stretch the spring to at least 110mm, and reassemble it.

The pintle can be walked out of the stepper motor gears by rocking it back-and-forth (radially) to alternately engage the opposing rack gears in the stepper motor while gently pulling. It can be replaced the same way. If the car is OBD-II, there should be no need to "re-learn" the IAC position. Simply insert the pintle all the way to compress the spring fully, then install the IAC back in the TB. If the pintle is not inserted far enough when bolting the IAC back into the TB, the stepper motor can be destroyed by the compression of the pintle against the rack gears.

You can read the resistance of each of the two stepper coils to make sure the IAC motor is electrically intact. Each of the coils should have between 30-50 ohms resistance, and infinite resistance to ground (no reading).

It was just as richtazz said. The FPR was bad. I got that changed out and decided to drain the rad and replace the thermastat. While I had it idleing in drive for 10 min the SES light came on (hadn't done that before). I went thru the rest of the relearn process with the SES lite on. Then I put it into "park" and turned the AC to max to see if the fans came on. Well one fan comes on and when it does the SES lite goes off. When the fan shuts off the lite comes back on. I watched it for several cycles. I topped of the radiator with more coolant and tried again. The lite came back on. Tomorrow I'll run it to Auto Zone and have them check for codes.
Thanks for all your help
Dan
