Have you checked the trans fluid level and condition? Should be full to one pint over on the TH700/4L60E, and a nice deep clear red to clear orangish red color, no murkiness, brown/black, metal or strong odor.

torque convertor possibly, check fluid level while engine is running.

Change the filter and fluid as the first step - probably never done! Should be done every 50k max. Under $100 at any trans shop or DIY for $10 filter and 4-5 qts Dexron fluid - plus a fun mess. Look at the pan there is a flat shallow pan and then a deeper one with a step in it - most 4wds have the step and 2wds the flat I believe. Valoline max has a new fluid that helps clean and reseal thats seems to help the older trans after a filter change.

Once again, what is the level and condition of the fluid? One month ago isn't today - things do happen.

The symptoms you described are identical to a transmission that is 3-4 quarts low on transmission fluid, and also identical to a transmission that needs the bands adjusted or one having a bad pump. So, if it’s not low on fluid you will need to visit a transmission shop.

how much would it cost for a new pump and to adjust the bands?

The only band "adjustment" on a TH700-R4/4L60E is to replace it. There is no band acnchor adjustment screw any more, since the bands really don't wear unless there is a serious problem. A new pump probably isn't necessary at only 175K unless something else has failed and scattered metal poweder all through the trans oil.

Before getting all hot and excited about replacing hardware, perform a line pressure check and see what's really happening. You can do that without even draining the oil pan.

Pay attention.

Go for a 10 miles drive and get the engine and tranny warmed up.

Park and leave the engine running.

With you foot on the brake, go through all the gears from park to 1 and back up to park and hold it in each step for 20 seconds on the way down and on the way up.

Do not touch the gas when cycling through the gears.

Then check the fluid level.

I agree with Blue Bowtie. For sure a line pressure test will give you a very good indication of whats going on in the transmission. This test, along with a trans capable, bi-directional scanner is what professionals use to diagnose trans problems, so looking at line pressure is a very good start.
