My daughter just called to tell me the check engine light has come on in her 2002 Saturn. Any suggestions what could cause that?? Could a bad fuse possibly cause it??
Many thanks, Lansdowne

Hello: How would i find the answer to the codes question? Is that something that has to be checked through a scope or soemthing like that?? I can get the engine and model etc from her.
Thanks

yes. the codes are retrieved with an OBDII scan tool. the model will either be an S-series, an L-series, or a Vue. S-series have a 1.9L DOHC, or 1.9L SOHC. The L-series and Vue will either have a 2.2L or 3.0L. The check engine light can come on for hundreds of reasons. thats why i asked for codes.

Hello again...the Saturn is a SL1......i do not know the engine size, Just reading the handbook..it says that a light staying on indicates ana emission control system malfunction. The book mentions a few possibilities such as gas cover not on properly, vehicle low on fuel or recent change in fuel brands (none of which apply).I am hopeful for my daughter's sake (and probably for mine!!) that the problem is not really serious.

we need to know what the codes are before you can get any help. the SES comes on when there is an emmission related problem with the car and you need to use an obd-ii scanner to retrieve them(all vehicles are required to have this by way of the federal government.) there are two ways to get codes, at an autozone usually for free or buy you own scantool, ranging from generic ones on ebay for 50 bucks to top of the line costing over 600.

more then that, a Snap-on MODIS scaner cost $7700, without any add-ons

if you take it to autozone, they will do the scan for free and give you the codes.
